WITH TWO HOURS TO SPARE~!
Happy Backwards
Presents...
Image

A kinetic novel reimagining of the classic fairytale Rapunzel.

See through the eyes of the girl in the tower, the prince who finds her and the witch who had stolen her away as the story unfolds, very close to the original versions, but unique unto itself.

Rapunzel is Happy Backward's (The visual novel group that is bringing you RockRobin) first finished game. We spent every moment we could almost up to the last minute trying to perfect this kinetic novel in art, GUI, writing and sound/music/expression directing. We hope you enjoy our NaNoRenO offering, and we're very glad to have participated (especially me as it is the first major project I headed in Happy Backwards as Snow White & Rose Red is under Rock Robin in my personal priority)

Gameplay Time: ~40 minutes

The game should now work fine on macs and other computers alike, thank you all for being patient, and thank you Aleema for having my back <3

Fudge.

Thank you, I'm going to go through and see if I can fix it, it even does it with the mac only version(I had one other person do it, but I wasn't sure if it was just her computer or not), but doesn't do it on windows.

EDIT: Added a version without that .png to see if it likes it better, sorry again about that.

Here's an all-platform version of the game that doesn't even use that code: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=XX9FI5CP
The error was in the code, not the PNG, so if you have a Mac, download this version.

To cheer this thread up, I want to say that I had an absolutely marvelous time working with this project. Starling is a surprisingly sweet project leader, she was receptive to ideas, and even actually took suggestions! I feel like the finished product is a really strong visual novel. Even though it is kinetic, it uses that to make a cinematic experience. There are distinct moments in the game and I can remember them vividly thanks to the writing and the music, and even the visual/sound effects. I really like how everything turned out, and I hope to be a part of Starling Tales' next fairy tale: Snow White and Rose Red.

Finished it! C:
I must say I'm not a fan of KNs, but this one was short and sweet. The pacing was well done and I really liked the music and sounds used.
I feel a little sad for the witch though. She's pretty intimidating and I'd run away from her if I were Rapunzel, but I don't think I'd want her dead. She really does seem to love Rapunzel very much and surely Rapunzel feels something for her as well?

@Elze: I'm glad you enjoyed it :D
It is sad, and yes Rapunzel did love her very much, but she had also felt that her mother had changed, and she also didn't know that the acorn would have "killed/sealed" her, she just wanted to buy time to escape. And sadly Mena would have followed Rapunzel to the ends of the earth to get her back.
P.S. Aleema you make me blush with all that praise >//< XD

The same error happens also to me:

Code: Select all

File "/home/pigi/dload/Rapunzel-all/renpy/display/im.py", line 468, in load
    surf = renpy.display.pgrender.load_image(renpy.loader.load(self.filename), self.filename)
File "/home/pigi/dload/Rapunzel-all/renpy/loader.py", line 338, in load
    raise IOError("Couldn't find file '%s'." % name)
IOError: Couldn't find file 'images/starlingtales.png.'.

While running game code:
 - script call at line 797 of C:\Users\Samantha\Documents\Rose\Games\renpy-6.11.2/common/00library.rpy
 - script at line 379 of C:\Users\Samantha\Documents\My Dropbox\Rapunzel/game/script.rpy
the main difference is that I use Linux, as everyone here knowns.

I don't understand what is the error: the filenames coincides, so isn't the usual case-sensitiveness, so I'm somewhat baffled. Perhaps some bugs elsewhere ?

Best regards from Italy,
dott. Piergiorgio.

If you didn't download from the megaupload could you try that if it's at all possible?

Looking at the issue, I think I know what the problem was and I thought I had fixed that and I'm pretty positive it's fixed in the megaupload since Aleema put that one up purposely having fixed that issue.

Sorry about this.

Wow, I just started reading but I have to say, the writing is top notch. I love the twist you put on each character to make them unique from both the original story and from each other.

You can expect this same level of writing from her Snow White and Rose Red game as well. d:

OK I have DL' from megaup, and works as expected, that is, well.

I can point that one of the factors of confusion lies in the "&attached" after the MU link and prior of the link of the, indeed attached, link to the (bugged) version uploaded here on LS. I parse it as both DL are good, whose seems that is not the case, and I suspect that I'm not only me that gets confused and/or misled by this wording....

Later for the comments/opinions.

Best regards from Italy,
dott. Piergiorgio.

Edit: Indeed also I have made a mistake in writing... oh, well, apropos

Depending on what time you originally downloaded it, the attached might have still been the bad file, I had a bit of trouble with the initial uploads.

Glad it works now though :) Hope you enjoy it.

Ahhh~ that was so lovely. Fairy tales were my first true love as a child, and this is a beautiful rendition of Rapunzel. The characters were well-written and interesting, and I really enjoyed reading it.

The GUI is adorable. I love the storybook feel, and the music selections you made fit so well. I'm especially fond of the main menu music, but it was all very nicely done. Thank you, and I look forward to seeing more from you.
