Howl's Moving Castle [no spoilers]

#1 Post by absinthe » Sat Apr 01, 2006 3:12 am

Heya, just wanted to share some details on this very enjoyable (anime?) movie I just finished watching. :) [Edited to add that there's nothing much spoiler-ish in here.]

I missed it in the theater (limited distribution in our area) and I was pretty pleased to find it on DVD so quickly since I thought I'd lost my chance to see it.

If you've read the book, you'll be surprised at some of the changes but I think you'll most likely still enjoy it. They weren't the most extreme changes I've ever seen in an adaptation (see "Flight of Dragons" for that), but it definitely wasn't the most faithful to the book either, which was a little disappointing since I liked the book so much.

This is the first Studio Ghibli production I've seen (I think The Hobbit was by the same artists, though, did anyone else have nightmares from that?), and while I was a little surprised at some of the imagery, overall it was pretty darn good.

I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say the romance is very sweet, and that the characters are very well characterized and engaging. Oh, and the Castle is really cool. :D The juxtaposition of fantasy and technology in the setting is very visually intriguing as well.

Oh, and the book was very good too. :)

shouldn't this be in the games, anime and j-stuff forum?

back to the topic: I haven't seen this one yet. I tried watching it about a week ago but I didn't really like the character designs and since it wasn't really holding my attention, I decided to stop and save it for a particularly boring day.
How do you make your games? I see. Thank you for the prompt replies, but it is my considered opinion that you're doing it wrong inefficiently because I am a perfushenal professional. Do it my way this way and we can all ascend VN Nirvana together while allowing me to stroke my ego you will improve much faster. Also, please don't forget to thank me for this constructive critique or I will cry and bore you to death respond appropriately with a tl;dr rant discourse of epic adequately lengthy proportions. - Sarcasm Veiled in Euphemism: Secrets of Forum Civility by lordcloudx (Coming soon to an online ebook near you.)

Whoa! I had to scratch my head at this (since I could have sworn I looked for something like that) -- then I went to the main page, and scrolled down past the first screen of forums.

I don't think I've ever done that before. No, seriously, for some reason it never occurred to me there might be more than one screenful. Brain sputter, I suppose? My bad... perhaps someone could move it over there for me? Or maybe there's a way for me to do it myself? I'm not much for forums usually.

Yeah, my first thought was 'whew, those noses are horrible!' but I really enjoyed the setting a lot, enough so I could overlook some of the stylization. Perhaps my enjoyment was more based on the fact that I really liked the book than I thought upon first viewing?

re noses>> But that's the Ghibli style! Anything else would make it unGhibli-ish.

Yeah, Ghibli is definitely fond of old woman with big noses.

I'm pretty sure that that studio never did an adaptation of any of J.R.R. Tolkein's work, and I could name for you almost everything they've done over the years.

Howl's wasn't too bad. It seemed kind of random in the end though, and I liked Laputa and Totoro much better. But then, those were movies I grew up on.

Yes, the ending needs some ironing out. Otherwise, Nausicaa, Whisper of the Heart, Spirited Away and Totoro still beats it on my list.
