Western Animation

#1 Post by Friendbot2000 » Sat Apr 16, 2011 11:17 am

We talk a lot about Eastern animation a lot here so how about this as a change of pace: do any of you watch western animation? Now don't think this excludes you Europe. You are technically a part of the western world. If you are an old geezer or old biddy then tell us what you used to watch that fit under the western animation umbrella.

My all time favorite show was Courage the Cowardly Dog. Even though t was the same base plot over and over the show always made it fresh with interesting and kind of spooky villains. I mean there is some seriously f&$ked up stuff in that show. They had alsorts of theme episodes that dealt with reAl issues like global warming and obesity. All and all it was a really good show and I miss it.

Not exactly and old biddy, but I do love the classics of "western" animation; the old Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny, and of course; old-school Disney, when animation was mostly by hand; Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Sleeping Beauty, etc. They opened the floodgates for modern animation. Even Osamu Tezuka, the "father" of anime, derived much of his fascination for anime from Disney.

I liked how anyone of any age could enjoy them.
It was more innocent, I think, than many, if not most, cartoons nowadays.

I use the words old biddy and old geezer affectionately. In my family we toss around playful insults more than we do compliments. XD

haha, well, I was being more ironic, since I'm in my late teens. Though I feel old sometimes. ^_^ No offense taken.

Right now, while I do enjoy classics like Tom and Jerry and Loony Tunes, my other favorite Western-oriented shows would have to be Batman Beyond and Powerpuff Girls-- well, those are pretty old too now that I think about it.

Current shows that are pretty popular are Adventure Time and My Little Pony: Friendship is magic. Both shows are excellent, have a unique animation and art style, and best of all 2D!!!

I grew up watching Disney films. I probably saw like every animated Disney film a bajillion times. I never understood why so many people who like anime are so quick to have this kneejerk "Ew, Disney!" reaction, but I'm not one of them.

My favorite western-animated movie, hands down, is The Secret of NIMH. In terms of animation, story, soundtrack... I think it's a masterpiece.

And there is a Hungarian-animated film I really love too, Willy the Sparrow.

by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride
and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past."

What, really? I LOVE Disney films and anime though! D: They're both great examples of 2D animation. Maybe those people don't like Disney just because it isn't anime? :?

My fav. animation TV-show right now is Invader Zim (I'm pretty late, yeah). Soooo weird, but sooo cool and have a sooo pretty style. I loved X-men & Daria & Hey, Arnold & Lloyd in Space...

I love all movies from Disney & Pixar.

Du'h, I just love all funny and interesting cartoons including anime. But I don't think cruel and no offence ugly cartoons are funny, for example CatDog, or Ren's & Stimpy's Show. So I don't like them.

You are my hero!

.. Well, I nearly watched all the Disney & Pixar films until Disney got Pixar. Newer films like cars etc. are just not the same as Lion King and all the others..
Oh god, I miss the old times ;_;

(+ Tom & Jerry <3<3)

Aaaah yes, I loved Don Bluth animated films even more than Disney ones, but I still enjoyed Disney Movies. Secret of NIMH, All Dogs Go To Heaven, THe Land Before Time, American Tale, Anastasia, Titan A.E. ... I love them all. I hate the sequels to most, though. Well, the second American Tale as alright. But the neverending cascade of sequels for The Land Before Time were obnoxious, and I couldn't even finish watching The Secret of NIMH 2.

Ooooh Daria! I was so happy when Daria finally came out on DVD! That is a show I really adored. It's hard to believe something so witty resulted as a spinoff from Beavis and Butthead.

T.V. shows I enjoyed watching as a child were The Transformers, Jem and the Holograms, Batman the Animated Series... uh and some other stuff I am sure. I just can't think right now. My mother had Jem and the Holograms episodes recorded off of T.V. so I was watching it even after it stopped airing.

Disney has a huge influence on my art style. You can still see it in the proportions of all the bodies I draw.

I'm also a massive comic book geek, so I love all the the DCAU and Marvel animated stuff. Even Static Shock and Zeta. XD I'm pretty sure I had a crush on Terry from Batman Beyond when I was a kid. >.>;; Right now, I'm enjoying Young Justice immensely.

I absolutely LOVE Disney movies... <3 The classical ones and just some new ones (such as Princess and the Frog. :3 ).

Otherwise, I like watching Fairly-Odd Parents... xD For older shows, I liked watching Totally Spies, Cyber6 and Ned's Newt. xD There are more of course, but I really liked the different drawing styles of all of them! :3 <3
