Scholarships?

#1 Post by Fawn » Tue May 31, 2011 2:30 pm

So, there's a lot of college students/grads on here. Might as well ask about scholarships!

Any tips, stories, ect. on how/where to get them? I'm on the hunt right now but everywhere I turn I feel intimidated.

Apply for as many as possible, even if you don't think your chances of getting them are good. The more you apply to, the greater chance of getting one or two. Also try and identify what may make you different, maybe your race, religion, or ethnicity, and apply for related scholarships, since those will likely have fewer applicants. Check with your parents or grandparents - the companies they work for or organizations they are part of may have scholarships that a lot of people won't know about.

Definitely try and get as many grants and scholarships as you can - the lending market right now, even for student loans, is appallingly bad. Grants paid for half of my degree, and I've still got several tens of thousands of dollars in student loans I'm paying off.

My advice is to look into local scholarships more than anything. Talk to your guidance counselor and see if your school keeps any records or databases of local scholarships. Much of the time, no one even bothers to apply for these, and millions of dollars in scholarship money goes unclaimed. You are far more likely to win four local $500 scholarships than one big national $2000 scholarship. (Trust me, I know. I got a $2500 for writing a local history essay, and only three other people applied for the scholarship; all of them also got $500 each.) Also, look into the universities to which you are specifically applying and see if you qualify for any of their scholarships.

Budget your time. Some applications require a lot more work (writing essays, submitting projects and proposals) than others (submitting your transcript and ACT scores). Doing a slapdash job on an essay will just serve to waste your time. I know that seems obvious, but I made the mistake in high school of valuing quantity over quality when it came to applications, and I think I suffered for it. That being said, I agree that you should apply for as much money as you can. Education in the United States is ridiculously expensive, but I managed to score a merit-based scholarship from my university that will allow me to graduate from college debt-free without asking my parents to pay a cent. It can be done!

I was lazy and didn't directly apply for any >_> Really should have though, would have helped out. Now I just have a $15000 debt...
I did get a $1000 one for getting the top TER (tertiary entrance rank) at my school, but I didn't have to directly do anything for that.
I would just suggest going for anything you can, not like you lose something by doing so and there is plenty to gain :D

And now I got another offer of Japanese scholarship OTL...
about 230 000 yen a month ($2300?) for maximum 5 years. This the sum for the monthly expense for daily life, not including the school fee that will also be free.
I already got one 7 years ago? for 3 years (should be 5, but I didn't find university that I want to go that time and I missed it).

And now I'm totally confused... since I'm pretty old and if I accept it, I will be with other students that is nearly 10 years younger than me, same old with my youngest brother... (and yet I feel like want to work by making game than go to school again....)
