SAI or Photoshop?

#1 Post by Junker-Kun »

I'm thinking about starting using SAI instead of Photoshop. But I wonder if it's a good idea. What do you think?

I haven't had a chance to work on Sai that much so I can't really answer your question. From what I hear though, a lot of people like it because it's more painter friendly than Photoshop. On the flip side, a lot of professional artists use Photoshop for practically all art fields and I think it's just a matter of learning how to use it that's the main barrier. I actually made a simple listing of ImagineFX's awesome tutorials here (all using Photoshop) so check it out when you can. There are mainly all realistic but the techniques taught may be used for other purposes. Also, there's a few manga-specific tutorials as well in that list.

Well, I would give SAI a shot if it's compatible with Macs... but unfortunately, it's not. Therefore, I use Photoshop, or sometimes Gimp.

Try MyPaint. It's a free open source painting program. It says it can work on Mac.

Personally, I use Gimp so I'm not much help here ^^;

I would like to warn that while MyPaint is an absolutely wonderful painting program (I use it myself), it's just that - a painting program. You can't even resize images in it.

The latest version of Photoshop ( CS5) can do just about anything that SAI can. But,it has a few drawbacks. It's price first, around a 1000 $ IIRC ( around 50 $ for SAI ), and its speed. Because of the many tools, filters, effects, etc... that Photoshop has, its speed will drop dramatically when you start working on high resolution paintings. Also, painting tools with color mix are much slower in Photoshop than in SAI, even if you have more RAM memory.

For drawing (lineart) and coloring, go for SAI
For coloring and editing graphics (with special effects and filters), go for Photoshop.

Actually both of these softwares could do just about anything, so they are more or less the same. But don't forget that Photoshop is harder to use and FREAKIN' expensive (but obviously, have more variety of functions)!

For me, I really use photoshop for adding details and texture. I bought cs5 and <.< I really can't get used to it. I need to have so many rituals to be able to change background eraser to normal eraser tool.<~~Out-of-topic.lol

Anyways, I use a genius tablet which seems to be incompatible in any photoshop programs cause when i do the outline, it always looks ugly and rough. Whereas in SAI, I can use the stabilizer to make a smoother, cleaner lines and I can just easily switch to vector lining if I'm lazy to actually work on my stuff.lol I also love the fact that I can just easily press Ctrl+z to delete my mistakes cause in photoshop, you can only do it once and you need to use the erase tool after(<~~as i said, my cs5 has a cranky stupid trick before i can access the normal eraser.)

--It really depends on you and your tablet(<~ yeah, if your tablet is same as mine, its better to use SAI for better work). :) But its really just not me, many people are using sai than photoshop for yeah, like LVUER said, linearting and coloring then finishing touches in photoshop. :D

I don't really know in Photoshop CS5, but in Elements 5, there's an option to choose whether you use CTRL+Z to undo or the usual CTRL+SHIFT+Z. But I think all in all photoshop (or Adobe products) you could change all shortcuts.
