No refrigerator

#1 Post by yvanc »

hiya, refrigerator have been one of man's greatest invention. It preserves food and you get to keep your ice cream for days. If find yourself in a situation where you don't have a fridge, how do you live off without a refrigerator?

Is this a spam? jk ^_^ Indeed, I couldn't imagine what to do without refrigerator at my house. Without it, perhaps I have to make a daily trip to market, store, or other place where I could buy food/ingredients.

If there's no one have refrigerator, then I will start growing some vegetables at my own yard. So that I don't have to worry about food anymore.

You could just buy ice and use an ice box, theoretically.

Lemme see, you could always dry and then smoke the meat. Alternatively you could salt them instead or put them in vinegar (probably better for veg).

Better yet, eat fresh every day, though it would mean that you won't have any cold drinks standing by unless you have an ice box.

Though in the long run, it's probably better to buy a fridge than eating out every day.

My grandparents who live in another country, don't have a fridge. I visit them every summer and at first, I thought they were crazy for not buying one but soon adjusted to their lifestyle. They still have cold water, that they get every week. For the food, they have like a farm (not really a farm but something like it) they make their own food and buy their food from markets and grocery stores. They're not poor, or anything. But I guess they just prefer sticking to their old lifestyle (at least they have a tv, lol) and I don't find myself missing the fridge when I visit them.

I'm not sure how living without a fridge in places like the city would work though ^^;

If you'll live on the side of river or lake, you could put a box in water and store food in there. Also you could use basement or even could dig a cell in the ground hill (it is always cold underground).

Ah yes, if you're living near any of the poles or anywhere where there is lots of ice, you could put your food outside to freeze.

I also believe that there's a delicacy called igunaq, frozen walrus. You bury it in the summer and leave it to rot and then freeze in the winter. Wait a year later, dig it back out and eat it.

I think I would just subsist on bread, vegetables, and fruit.

Which is pretty much my same diet as now. :lol:

I second the dried meat idea. Dried foods in general are good (except for dried vegetables.. bleh) native people in the ancient days survived off dried foods so it's definitely doable :D

Corn tastes good dry... or is it classified as a grain at that point?

Or we could resort to canned/non-perishable food ^_^

Before refrigerators, people would dig these deep holes in the ground. It would be cooler than on the surface, so thats were they would store their perishable foods. I don't remember what the holes were called...
