The things people say to make you stop playing video games.

#1 Post by SilverxBlue »

I just asked my dad to buy me a copy of Professor Layton last week since I really wanted to know what it was all about, and I got hooked! I have been bringing my DS with me almost everywhere, then a certain someone (namely my stepmom) told me to stop playing with my DS because....

"It will melt your brain and you will turn into a brainless piece of garbage." (I had to bite my tongue since I was about to shout "I am playing with puzzles! It will do the exact opposite, god damn it!")

and

"The radioactive blah (I forgot the word) being emitted by my DS will give me cancer." (Actually she says the same thing about my laptop, my phone, and my PSP.)
She even told me to just throw all of them away. TT_TT

Oh and there's this other one;

"That's why you have poor eyesight." (And in this one, I just had to mutter "Don't blame my games, blame genetics.")

So anyway, since I'm pretty sure almost all of you here are gamers. What do some of your friends/relatives tell you when they ask you to stop playing video games? (I hope I come across something that's way more absurd than the cancer thing. :? )

Well, I don't remember what they used to say when I was younger (I was playing, not paying attention.. :P), but now in my twenties I mostly get "Do something useful, will you?"

I'm not a huge game-player anyway. A visual novel every now and then, maybe a RPG on the DS.. for the story, gameplay is mostly an annoyance.

They say that because they belong to an earlier period.
They don't understand that some games can help you develop your brain too.
So just don't take it seriously.

Code: Select all

Stop playing games and find a girl already... I mean a REAL girl! Get married! And then I'll let you play games again.
That's what my parents told me. And that's why I still haven't buy my PS3 and HD TV along with it (T__T) Not a financial problem... rather a "love" problem.

It's a generation problem (usually people over 40).

The first books were considered heresy and burned.
The first movies were considered pornographic and banned.

We are still in the early gaming stage -- the technology has leapfrogged, but the medium itself is still really young.

The best way to exact payback is to become a successful young game developer and earn millions of dollars. That should make your parents shut up.

ugh, my mom always told me that if i always play games, play psp and ds ...my mind will turn computerized =.= I wanna shoved to them that i can't do that cause playing games make me improve my japanese reading skills and help me remember some more words than just staring at the TV with all those idiot samurais and bushis(my stepdad loves watching samurai-related crap). I earned the title "hikikomori" since last month(start of summer vacation). I would even love to tell them that its thanks to all this games that I can go to school now and read few kanjis and stuff <.<

Heh. My college course is on game development so I have an excuse. :D
Nonetheless, my mother doesn't like me spending too much time on the computer. Apparently it makes me "Antisocial", never mind the fact that I'm far more social than I used to be before I started spending so much time at it.

@DaFool:
Yeah, I wish could do that ^_^ that will shut not just the parents, but practically almost everyone's mouth... or rather leaving their mouths gapping open.

This. Though even when i was a child I'm really antisocial, games made it worse Dx I still love gaming nonetheless.

Well my mum likes video games herself, so she doesn't complain that much. Although she used to say, don't stare at a screen for too long or your pupils will go square.

My mother preferred I was playing video games rather than running the streets getting into trouble. Especially the RPGs and puzzle games I preferred at the time. Fighting games were discouraged, such as they were, were openly discouraged, and FPS wasn't even a gleam in id software's eye in the age of the dinosaurs. I had an Atari 2600 and a Commodore 64, and I learned lots.
I'm going to get off my soap-box now, and let you get back to your day.

on PSP
Law professor: You're still playing with that thing? That's my 5-year old grandson's favorite toy!
Me: And...?
Law professor: never mind. (shakes head in disbelief)
(The game was Project Diva 2nd btw.)

How do you make your games? I see. Thank you for the prompt replies, but it is my considered opinion that you're doing it wrong inefficiently because I am a perfushenal professional. Do it my way this way and we can all ascend VN Nirvana together while allowing me to stroke my ego you will improve much faster. Also, please don't forget to thank me for this constructive critique or I will cry and bore you to death respond appropriately with a tl;dr rant discourse of epic adequately lengthy proportions. - Sarcasm Veiled in Euphemism: Secrets of Forum Civility by lordcloudx (Coming soon to an online ebook near you.)

Me: *Just finished cooking lunch and cleaning up the bathroom and my bedroom, so turning on laptop to play Dragon Age: Origins*
Mom: *Comes in* You should go exercise or do some chores instead of being on the computer all the time!
Me: .... I just did a bunch of chores man.

Now if I was a super obsessed gamer who did nothing to help around the house, I wouldn't argue with her. But such scenarios such as the above are when if I feel justified in some game time.
