Stay healthy

#1 Post by JustAnotherMe » Mon Oct 31, 2011 1:57 am

What do you usually do to stay healthy?

I find it hard to do because while I really like to eat veggies and fruits and drink mineral water, I don't do workouts. Usually I just go to swimming once a month!!! (While I have a treadmill just standing over there with dust on it) And I tend to sleep really really late (I think most of us do that, huh? ^^) And if I go out, I'll just go to mall wth friends or sth like that (and probably end up in cinema or cafe or sour sally). I'm a bit of the type to go to nature and experience adventure, but I don't have a friend that have the same interest, or just plainly don't have time (either me or my friends), or cannot because of my strict parents. I'd like to go sometimes, to somewhere I don't know, but by then, I'd probably make a food tour which really doesn't do any good to my diet rather than a healthy walking and breath fresh air (which what I'm doing right now).
Just curious XD

I drink nothing but water and tea and occasionally coffee. I never drink soda or juice (has a lot of sugar in it!!)
I eat mostly organic foods, and never eat anything that's fried or has a lot of artificial things. Salad and all fruits are some of my favorite things to eat >u< I even cut meat out of my diet (I still eat fish, but soon I will cut that out too) for health reasons. I actually have somewhat poor health so I can't eat very heavy food without suffering chest pains :/
Nowadays, I don't do any exercise other than the long walk between my university classes, and occasionally play DDR at the arcade (if that counts as exercise, lol XD). I really should do more, but I'm so busy I don't have time or energy to work out! So I'm like you. Healthy diet, but don't exercise enough. I'm skinny yet horribly out of shape. XD

I work out at the gym 2-3 times a week and go rock climbing every Sunday (sometimes also on Tuesday). My diet is basically "eat when I'm hungry, don't eat if I'm not hungry", but I'm on the paleo diet so I eat no wheat, grain, oatmeal, that sort of thing... Being Asian, I decided cutting rice out of my diet would be impossible, but I restrict myself to eating rice/rice-based products (like rice noodles) to once a week at most. My diet mostly consists of meat and vegetables. I drink juice sometimes for the vitamins and whatnot, but never from concentrate. When possible, I squeeze my own orange and grapefruit juice at home. Usually I drink tea, coffee (no cream), and water, though.

Thanks to all this, I almost never get sick and I have totally clear skin and good health. :3 Exercise--at least 30 minutes 3x a week--and proper sleep patterns really important to your overall health. You might not feel it now since you're young, but if you get used to a sedentary lifestyle, you'll surely have health problems in the future no matter how good your diet is.

@teacup: I know what you feel. TAT I too have somehow a bad health, so I can't go a day without taking my usual med, and I have to strict my food. But I really like sweets!! (I know I should get it out of my system, but I can't) Even to the extend that I like to eat rice/noodles with ice cream or condensed milk or chocolate or fruits on top of it. But then I must suffer for my reckless eating... (I won't say what, it's rather disgusting) We really need to get in shape somehow TuT And I really want to learn from your eating habit (cut those meat out too, and restrict my sugar intake)

@Camille: I really want to learn from you!!!! It's hard to do, but I must do that! And you're right that I'd have health problems in the future if I keep on doing what I do TT_TT
And, YAY for rice!!!

I walk most of the time wherever I go. That is an easy way to stay healthy.
And I don't take any outside food, other than a soft drink sometimes.
It has been many years since I gave up eating flesh, and I gave up eggs too a few months back. I have never had any health problem since then (except for my eyes. Maybe it's because of spending too much with the computer.)
Excluding my eyesight, I can say that my health is perfect.
It think it mostly depends on your food. I don't see any profit from going to the gym unless I want to build muscles, and I have no need for that, since I don't plan to become a wrestler, nor a bodybuilder.
The people of ancient days were healthier compared to us. They didn't go to gyms. The reason today's people fall sick is outside food which is completely unhealthy.
Morning walks are also a great way not only to stay healthy but to enjoy the beauty of nature as well.
And stay away as far as you can from people who are smoking.

Same here! (Although I'll drink soda and juice every once in a while, but in strict moderation.) And all you sweet-tooths out there, the sweetened iced tea they sell in stores has about as much sugar as soda, so it's not much better for you >_<

If you have to sweeten your tea, just stick to a tiny bit

For hot tea, green and white tea are the best IMO since they have health benefits and much less caffeine than black tea.

I have a huge sweet tooth so I put a little honey in my tea... It's nice when it's cold out though, makes my tea even better @__@

As for other healthy things, I always eat small proportions. I take it slow and enjoy the food- and always leave room for a little dessert. (which on a good day is a small portion of icecream or dark chocolate)

Also it's great to keep veggies around for snacking... Just today my BF and I were snacking on snow peas. They have a satisfying crunch and are so tasty! Though my personal favorite snacks are dried fruits, specially apricots and apples, so very yummy!!

I agree with this, a lot.
Not only people who smoke, but you need to avoid the actual smoke as well. (You know, the ones coming from cars and factories.)

I'm asthmatic and whenever I jog around our neighborhood, I tend to slow down and have difficulty breathing whenever an annoying "smoky" car passes by.
And whenever I get too much "second hand" smoke, not only do I have difficulty breathing, I get pimples on my face and rashes around my neck. So if a lot of people around me smoke, I glare at them like I want to make them eat those stupid cigarette sticks.

I don't know if my diet is healthy or not, I avoid rice whenever I can, I only drink water, tea and milk, and I only have fruits and milk/ whole-grain cereal for breakfast. I also stopped eating pork 8 months ago.
But I do love pastries and sweets, so I guess that's the only thing that makes my diet... unhealthy. TT_TT

I've heard that eating honey can help against allergies, if it's locally made. Something about the pollen and adjusting your body to it or something like that, but I have no idea if it's true.

Sugar snaps are great :D Hitting the local farmers' market is always a good plan.

I always hold my breath when I see a smoker coming up and I need to walk by him/her

Haha, compared to everyone else, I make absolutely no effort to eat healthy/stay in shape :'D (Thank goodness for my metabolism?)
I actually don't like confectioneries or pastries, so that may be my saving grace.

I used to play competitive sports for roughly 3 hours each week, but I've stopped now for exams :'D

I don't think heavy exercise is completely necessary for a healthy lifestyle, it's just a plus. If you have time, a nice walk or slow jog around the block each day will more than suffice.

It's a good thing you already have your diet organised, it'll be easier for you to maintain a healthy lifestyle in the long run :D
I should learn something ahaha.....

Same here. I use a handkerchief.

I can't stand it if someone smokes near me. It is not only harmful for my lungs, but the smoke can harm my skin too.
There is a joke "He who smokes can never grow old. How? Because he dies before he can."
There is another joke from a smoker's point of view.
I was at a restaurant to have a burger. When I called the waiter, he said that I will not be given anything because smokers are not allowed in their restaurant and I had a cigar with me. He said that there is only one place that is used for smoking. He started giving me directions. He told me to go straight, and turn right, and then turn left and then again turn right, and again go left till I see a garbage dump. Only that area is available for smokers. It is the only area in the city where people can smoke. I was confused. I told him to repeat the directions. Then, he told me that the easiest way to reach that place would be following the big drain pipe.
Another quote: You are a fool if you think smoking is cool.

@Blue Lemma: Yeah, honey is much much better than usual sugar. I now, for some reason, eat my food with honey rather than with... anything sweet. (I know I must get rid of this weird habit)

I'm used to people smoking though, coz my dad usually smoking and my BF sometimes too (but I glare at him when he do that) and luckily, he listen to me ^^

And rather than getting on my computer until late at night, I might make walking in the morning my new habit... hope so.

@Tag-: owww, you know you must do that every once in a while, going with healthy food sometimes ^^

Why don't you try to help them quit smoking? I don't think it's that hard to help someone quit.

Uh, I think most people who go to gyms are ordinary people who have no plans to become wrestlers or bodybuilders, either... It's called getting your heart rate up and building lean, healthy muscle. What's the point in being skinny if your skin is all flabby and you're all pale and out of shape? Not saying that everyone should go to the gym, but that's a very stereotypical view of them.

@Wright: Oh I don't know, but for me I find it hard to make someone stop if that someone doesn't really care or even think of it. (I have some friends who smokes on regular basis, though I avoid them whenever they start smoking)

And I think Camille have a point there. It's not to become a body builder or something like that, it's just her preference on her life. I'll do swimming because I just like swimming, not to become a professional swimmer or anything. No offense, Wright ^^
And actually I kind of know by what your point of view is. You view that working out at gym IS building muscle, but it's not just about muscle you know. I have been to gym in the past, and I really like just to move my body around doing some yoga or combat movements or aerobic or belly class. ^u^

Just some misunderstanding hereeeee~
