Peanut Sauce and other spicy foods

#1 Post by kara24601 » Sat Dec 31, 2011 8:31 pm

I don't understand why....Why do people insist on their peanut sauce being spicy?! I keep forgetting that peanut sauce is spicy so every now and then I'll get something that has peanut sauce and then it's hard to enjoy the food because of the sauce being ridiculously spicy! *sigh*

If there's such a thing as a non-spicy peanut sauce recipe, I can't find it anywhere.

Everytime I go looking for "non-spicy peanut sauce" only recipes for the spicy kind show up.

So does anybody know how to turn spicy dishes into non-spicy dishes and how to make a non-spicy but still tasty "peanut sauce" ?

Because usually peanut sauce is spicy. All peanut sauce here is spicy... though perhaps it have something to do with (almost) all people here likes spicy food. I can't stand spicy food myself, but there's something lacking if I eat certain food without spicy sauce.

(There's a joke saying people who loves spicy food are M, because spicy is not a taste but rather irritation or our taste bud are being hurt).

My recipe for non-spicy peanut sauce is peanut butter, ketchup, soy sauce, and water. I make it for my friends who don't like spicy food.

As for making spicy food non-spicy, there's no way to turn the spice off, but drinking milk on the side helps.

Couldn't you just omit the spicy elements? The peanut sauce they serve at the Vietnamese restaurants in town aren't spicy at all, unless you start adding Sriracha.

It's not that hard to make your own. I do a bit of crushed peanut and sesame seed toasted in a pot with a tiny bit of oil, then a light vegetable broth with two tablespoons of peanut butter per cup of broth, then some ginger, soy sauce and maybe some brown sugar at the end. If I do want it spicy, I'll use maybe half a chile and toast that with the nuts and seeds.

I clicked on the post because I didn't know what peanut sauce was |D But I'd steal sake-bento's recipe or just go with Gear on this one. Just take out whatever's making the sauce spicy. It really shouldn't change anything else unless there were a few other things that were making it spicy as well.
