Again, websites

#1 Post by uselessp » Sat Jun 30, 2012 9:07 am

I may repeat myself if this is involving websites again. But, after some pretty deep thinking (With going crazy as intervals), I decided to make a websites to display my works (Both hosting VN and drawing arts).

HOWEVER!! I still don't know how, and as I searched in google, I got utterly confused by the complexity of making one. Thus, I have a request.

Could someone help me searching one? If you can, at least it's understandable to a klutz like myself. Also, I want it a free and easy to use websites. It doesn't matter wether it's a blog or websites. I only wished to hosts my own works freely for everyone....

You can ask redeyesblackpanda.
He might be willing to provide you with a website and help you build it.

redeyesblackpanda gave me a mirror link of my game. I was a bit worried about a connection speed in Asia, but it turned out really fast :)

Have you tried tumblr.com? You can use it as it is, grab pre-defined themes or user-made ones and then tweak them to fit your needs, you can set up different pages like a website too. It's pretty easy for a beginner and people who search tags on tumblr can go direct to your tumblr blog.
There's also Wordpress (the site, not the plataform), you can pay a small fee to customize your theme or choose from one of the pre-defined ones. I say Wordpress.com instead of hosting your own blog and then using Wordpress as a blogging plataform because if you host it on your own you will need to handle all the security issues that might come up in the long run, those aren't pretty. x_x
There's Google's blogger.com that lets you customize it using a pretty straight forward design editor, you can personalize it further if you play around with xhtml and css, everything for free.
As for sites, there are a bunch of free site builders out there, you can search for reviews for those that sparkle your interest and see their pros and cons.

Another suggestion is Multiply.com . . .Although I guess they converted it to an online business friendly site so it is now associated with online selling but I'm using it before as my personal site. It can be customized too.

I suppose it depends on what you want. It sounds like you don't have the programming knowledge to build your own (I don't either  ) so you're probably looking for something simpler. You'll want to decide if you want to pay for your own domain name, or if you don't mind being hosted on another site (often as a subdomain, like subdomain.wordpress.com). Now, you said you want to display pictures. If that's the case, I hear Tumblr is a very nice site for that, but it's always struck me as more of a social networking site. It might also be a good idea to build a site elsewhere as well, depending on what you're going for. Hosting VNs is a bit more difficult to do. There are sites like mediafire.com that you can link to (but they often have limits on how much you can upload for free). Like DragoonHP said, I'm also offering free hosting for those sorts of things (details are in my sig).

Not really checking the forums any more due to time constraints, so if you want to contact me, PM. I'll get a notification and log in.
Also, I've been hit and run posting, which means I don't see many replies. If you want to respond to something I've said, also feel free to PM me.

NOTE: if you've got questions about vnovel or things like that, it's Leon that you should be contacting. Leon's been pretty much handling everything, but due to various reasons, I've had to withdraw entirely.

Fixed that for you.

A domain name is a great investment - everyone should have one. (It costs about $10/year.)

What a domain gives you is independence.

Say you want to change your email service from yahoo to gmail. If you had given out your yahoo.com address, you now have to contact every person (and every company, and every robot) that communicates with you, and convince them to accept your new email address. If you owned your own domain, you just change where me@mydomain.com points to, and you're done.

Ditto for websites. Want to change from blogger to wordpress? You don't have to keep posting "this blog is dead, go check out the new one" - instead, you change the domain and the party rolls on.

A domain is the cornerstone of owning your own internet presence, as opposed to being beholden to others. Given how cheap they are now, it's a no-brainer.

Everyone who plans to stay in the business for a while and release a few things must (read: should leaning strongly to "yes, you really need one") have a place for their things. I don't care where you put it, you just need to have a corner of the internet to call your own. Word of mouth might get you places, but if you don't have somewhere that's official for your stuff, people will get confused and ask the same questions over and over again.

That said, the websites on vnovel look spiffy. kaleidofish's site looks clean, and while I like the blog and main page as separate things, it's easy to navigate around./end shameless plug for friend
