Episodic story advice

#1 Post by uselessp » Thu Jul 05, 2012 9:33 am

Well.... I'm having hard time about using an episodic story in my project. I don't know how to put it simply, (Yes, my English is bad because I'm a pure Indonesian.) but I want to make a chapter divided novel.

(e.g. Chapter one : intro, chapter two: getting started, chapter three: etc....)

What I'm asking is how to divide the branching points, timing for the beginning and ends of a chapter, and something related to that. (Sorry for being unclear :( . I'll try to answer if there's something that bothered you about this topic.)

My preferences (as a player, not as a writer):

- Make all of the chapters self-contained stories, with an overarching plot. Each of the chapters should have some kind of satisfying ending.
- Go easy on the cliffhangers. Even though they make readers curious for more, it's disappointing if for some reason the game never gets finished (Sin Episodes comes to mind).

I hope this answers your question a bit :)
Visualnovels.nl - We write (about) visual novels. In Dutch.
Dutch translations:
Visualnovels.nl Devblog - As above, but more relevant for non-Dutchies
Marijuana - De Waarheid / Witch Spell / Heartful Chance
Locked-In / Moonlight Walks [WIP]
The Knife Of The Traitor [WIP]
