The Cybercrime prevention law in the Philippines
I didn't see a topic about this yet, but if I missed it, then please say so.
Anyway, as many of you might know, the people in the Philippines are dealing with a so called Cybercrime prevention law. This is worse than SOPA and will cost citizens their online privacy and freedom. Depending on what they say online, it can lead up to many years of detention in jail if the government disagrees with it.
Here is the petition, where you can read more about it and vote against it: http://www.change.org/petitions/junk-th ... ention-law

Re: The Cybercrime prevention law in the Philippines
There doesn't seem to be a thread if there is a moderator will let us know, funny becuse i was thinking of visiting the Philippines... wow that's over something so small... "Using social network sites to talk to one another and using them in general?" from what i read "People value social sites because that is how people from other countries communicate to one another". I thought that only Korea secluded themselves from the internet. (Although i once heard a simuler story about China, but i can't be too sure)Anna wrote:I didn't see a topic about this yet, but if I missed it, then please say so.

I'm not resting until I find
What would make your eyes
Glisten like mine
With loves divine!
Boo-Boo I couldn't aspire....to anything...
Higher...than to fill that one desire to make it
My own....Bop-Bop-a-Dop-Boop-Oop-a-Doop honey?

Re: The Cybercrime prevention law in the Philippines
Hey! Thanks for giving the link I'm from the PH and I am really against this law -_- The petition letter was right, the cybercrime law somehow could help against hacking, identity theft & etc. but to include the online libel & others are just too much. If this law can't be stopped, then it should at least be revised -_-
Can sorta write but CAN'T art so I am just here for the otomes! Ahihihi <3

Re: The Cybercrime prevention law in the Philippines
No problem, it's a stupid and vague law and it should be revised. I also found the reason for it ridiculous. The government hiding away for its own faults behind these 'laws for the good of the people', screw that.greenheartnellie wrote:Hey! Re: The Cybercrime prevention law in the Philippines
No offense to the Philippines, but of all things, their government is worrying more about web crime than the poverty?
China has more internet surveillance than any other country in the world, and look at their web crime! It skyrockets off the roof with virus makers, scammers, hackers, and "gold-sellers"!
So why should such a flawed idea be a priority in a country with so much poverty?
I'm not from there, so it's probably not right for me to comment much more. But this reminds me of the incompetent U.S. politicians at home who are just as incompetent.

Re: The Cybercrime prevention law in the Philippines
You can't really compare that, because the Chinese internet surveillance / censorship has little to nothing to do with actually preventing any real crime (even though they might claim that). Instead it is targeting people who speak up against the government or who have different opinions or believes.China has more internet surveillance than any other country in the world
So far 50% of the time I bought something from the Chinese Ebay clone I have received my item, and the other 50% of the time the seller simply did not ship the item. Even though I was not ordering from overseas, but was ordering through a friend in China. Sometimes the articles where worth a couple of hundred dollars, but there is nothing we could do. If you go to the police, they just ignore it. The only reliable justice in China right now, is mob justice and this is what is usually done in China if someone doesn't pay or doesn't deliver - you just sent someone to beat him up Police in China are not there for preventing crime

Lishy: I don't know anything about the Philippines but if I were to guess I'd say it's easier to distract the populace by doing something about something that's not a problem and claiming results than it is to actually attempt to solve real problems. Probably easier to pocket the money that way too.

Re: The Cybercrime prevention law in the Philippines
Talk about it, the crime rate in our country is seriously raising. The new about rapes, homicides, stolen organs and some other things. They find bullies on the internet far more threatening for some reason. Even more so the one who implemented the law is a hypocrite from what I heard around where I live. Also if we're caught voicing our opinion, we'd be sent to jail for "6-12 years" with a bailing fee "around 1 million pesos." (shakes head) It's crazy, even rapists don't get such a harsh treatment as that!Lishy wrote:No offense to the Philippines, but of all things, their government is worrying more about web crime than the poverty?

I wouldn't know, we have a female politician that runs away from being arrested by saying that she has an illness and runs off the hospital--all the time. Glad, they finally turned her hospital room into her private jail cell.
Re: The Cybercrime prevention law in the Philippines
I seen this coming.
Lack of individual freedom, close-mindness, absurd laws, goverment/religion forcing things onto people... I wouldn't like to live in such a country, with such a pression. No wonder some people simply brake down, others would like or even try to opose this and where's trouble, the already established crime world gains even more.
In overall - it's very simple to find a scapegoat and put all the blame onto it. You can call it however you want - the internet, loli porn, the "baddies", evil "japanese" cartoons... It's easier this way, it costs less as well (not necesarilly, but in most situations). They won't be (and most propably aren't able to, anyway) fighting the source. Instead, they will "fight" the symptoms and with a little bit of distraction, it's going to be much more comfortable for goverment to sweep things under the carpet in the right time.

Re: The Cybercrime prevention law in the Philippines
Supreme Court has blocked the law for four months to investigate it further.
These kinds of stupid laws are usually sponsored by dumb corrupt or naive politicians who want to silence one of the freest presses in Asia. Their time is ticking since reform is in the air.
The current Philippine government is actually among the best administrations in the entire nation's history. There's just a lot of dirty laundry that needs airing, and they're putting up a fight.
