Megaupload Due Back Next Jan

#1 Post by dramspringfeald » Wed Nov 07, 2012 10:11 pm

Mega Will relaunch on Jan 19.

Seems the FBI get their ass handed to them for questionable and/or Illegal Search warrants, Illegal seizure of property, Defaming, lost profits, and all kind of true piracy issues. Looks like the Fed will have to return their servers, the files and pay them a mess ton of money lost because of said illegal activity. Other info Vids

Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom back in action with with file-sharing sequel, Mega
WELLINGTON: Like a good Hollywood sequel, Megaupload is back.

Kim Dotcom, the founder of the shuttered file-sharing site that housed everything from family photos to blockbuster films, on Thursday announced a new online storage service called Mega that will give users direct control - and responsibility - over their files.

Mega will launch in January 2013, just before the internet entrepreneur is scheduled to face an extradition hearing to the United States where he and other Megaupload operators face charges of online piracy, fraud and money laundering.

In a snub to U.S. prosecutors, the site will not utilise U.S.-based hosting companies as partners in order to avoid being shut down by U.S. authorities.

Dotcom: FBI must prove its case
Kim Dotcom's extradition has become less certain after a judgment which will see the FBI having to prove it has the evidence to back up its charges - and a finding the legal document asking he be sent for trial in the United States did not comply with the law.

The ruling came on a day in which Dotcom went back to the High Court to again seek access to his restrained funds - this time to pay lawyer's bills which he has said now worth millions of dollars.
MegaUpload Users Plan to Sue the FBI over Lost Files
In most reports following the MegaUpload shutdown, the site is exclusively portrayed as a piracy haven.

However, hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of people used the site to share research data, work documents, personal video collections.

As of today, these people are still unsure whether they will ever get their personal belongings back.

In a response, Pirate Parties worldwide have started to make a list of all the people affected by the raids, and they are planning to file an official complaint against the US authorities.

“The widespread damage caused by the sudden closure of Megaupload is unjustified and completely disproportionate to the aim intended,” they announce.
Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom is planning to launch a replacement of his shuttered website
WELLINGTON: In a move bound to provoke US prosecutors and entertainment executives, indicted Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom is planning to launch a replacement of his shuttered website and a new online music service by year's end.

The file-sharing site that Dotcom started in 2005 was one of the most popular online sites before U.S. prosecutors shut it down and filed racketeering charges against Dotcom and six other Megaupload principals in January.

U.S. authorities are now trying to extradite Dotcom from New Zealand, where he's a resident, claiming he facilitated massive copyright piracy through his site. Prosecutors say Dotcom pocketed tens of millions of dollars while movie makers and songwriters lost some $500 million in copyright revenue.

The new Mega will not be threatened by U.S. prosecutors

I wonder if all those old files uploaded before the servers taken down would still be there...

The feds been told "They better be" but I suspect there will be an accident where they either lost the data or the servers themselves.

I hope it's not the case because my demos were on there as well as some of my emergency dump files. But it's been a few yeas so both are no longer relevant but they could be useful.

Your pile of updates fails to include their first attempt at finding a new launch being immediately shot down by people who knew perfectly well that megaupload is at least half crooked and refused to host it... also, "is asking for money" is not at all the same thing as "is absolutely going to be given lots of money while the FBI is flogged through the streets." You don't think that perhaps your coverage is a leeetle bit slanted?

It would definitely be nice if people could get their own files back though!

The feds have locked his bank accounts and the like. so he's starting from scratch. Not to mention I really doubt the fed will EVER pay it. Between finding gullshit reasons not to and simple saying "Nope" kill will be long dead before anything happens. hell we won't see the servers until sometime mid 2014.

We all know He's crooked but we also know that the fed fumbled this really poorly and went after him before there was any evidence, proof and well laws they could use. including not knowing the laws themselves.

He is using offshore Servers both for that reason and now we won't see any of the taxes like last time.

Yes my stuff a bit slanted. The Fed and a handful of other clandestine operations are being puppeted 5 or 6 major corporations as a last ditch effort to reclaim the fame and power they had in the 30's and 60's. Like when they lobbied against the VCR and the Casset Tape
Forbs VCR 30 years agoJack Valenti, testifying before a House Judiciary Subcommittee in 1982: "I say to you that the VCR is to the American film producer and the American public as the Boston strangler is to the woman home alone…"

I'll look forward to being able to watch anime online again.
Anime that I am legally entitled to watch for free on TV, but don't due to the inconvenient times and lack of English subtitles.

Actually your information is a bit old.

The Gabon government has refused to host new Mega in their country and they have ordered for the domain to be seized.
Also, some hackers have claimed that they had hacked the new mega website,

Even if he WERE to get a new file hosting site up, who would want to use it? If you're legitimate you don't want to use something hosted by a criminal, and if you ARE into illegal uploads, you don't want to use a site by someone who's already been busted and is on the watch list of multiple governments at this point. I learned a few things growing up being raised by criminals, and one is you don't go back to buy your stuff from a dealer who's been popped, even if they "beat" the charges. Either they're now a law enforcement stooge, or they're stupid enough they'll be arrested again and likely to get you caught in the process.

I find it likely that any "replacement" site put up with be an FBI honeypot, whether by design or by a function of their constant monitoring of it. Finally, Kim Dotcom is a royal idiot if he plans to launch the new filesharing site right before his extradition hearing. That's like starting your "legal" marijuana dispensary right before your court hearing on illegal possession of marijuana. I'm not touching anything that guy does with a 10-foot pole.

Exactly what LateWhiteRabbit said. Unless you want to do something illegal, there are now much better/reliable services to host files online, I don't know who would want to use them again for hosting their visual novels!

Which services would that be?

I see no problem in using an unreliable host, just reupload to another site when it goes down. Heck, just upload it to multiple hosting sites right away.

Well mediafire, rapidshare, etc - I know that "some people" upload illegal stuff there as well, but differently from Megaupload they were quick responding to DMCA takedowns, and in general less shady, making them more reliable to host stuff. All IMHO of course!

Yeah, I'm not sure why this thread is here. This is a general news story, and at this point, it doesn't really affect our community. (Getting back the lost games hosted on MU would be important to us.)

So there's no need to keep discussing this here.

The Visual Novel Initiative (started by members of this very forum!) hosts visual novels. I haven't read over all the details, but they look to be pretty accommodating, even allowing for 18+ games and fan works.
