Kickstarter in UK?

#1 Post by EroBotan » Thu Dec 27, 2012 8:30 pm

This is probably an old news, but a friend recently told me that kickstarter is open for UK people.

I thought it was available worldwide. I've seen some projects from Japan.

The #renpy IRC channel is a great place to chat with other devs. Due to the nature of IRC and timezone differences, people probably won't reply right away.

If you'd like to view or use any code from my VN PM me. All code is freely available without restriction, but also without warranty or (much) support.

Oh damn. Well, hopefully having a UK bank account is enough for the UK version.
I still have my old bank account from when I was living in London.

It's a complicated scenario - Kickstarter accepts projects from anywhere in the world, but it only lets you register if you have an Amazon payments account, which is only available for people who reside in the US and have a bank account. So if your project is in, say, Mexico but you have a team member residing in the US you can still register by using his info and Kickstarter won't mind at all.

For UK residents, you don't need an amazon payments account, just ID that confirms you are a permanent UK resident(this refers to legal status not the country you are living in at the moment) and a major credit/debit card.

For clarification, "Permanent Resident" refers to your legal status in a country rather than whether you are living there or not. The meaning of the term varies depending on the country but it generally means that the person is allowed to stay in the country for as long as he or she wants but isn't yet considered a citizen, meaning the "Permanent Resident" might not have the right to vote, health care or other benefits that are generally only allowed for citizens. This varies quite a bit as well - in Canada you have access to health care while being a permanent resident. It's generally a "waiting status" until you obtain citizenship.

In other words, if you were born in the UK/US or are in the process of immigrating, you are likely to be a permanent resident at some point. To simplify this point further, it means that living in the country as a student or part of a job isn't going to let you open a kickstarter project by itself, but if you obtained permanent resident status while doing that - yeah, you're golden. In the US this can be simplified as "Do you have a Social Security Number?" though I'm not entirely sure about what constitutes a permanent resident in the UK.

Hope that helped!

Subject: I am Mrs Rachelle Mustapha,

Dear friend compliment of the day,

I am Mrs Rachelle Mustapha, i have been working on game made of Ren'Py. i am afraid that i am in ASIA, and cannot make US or UK residence.

Now that i am about to apply for KICKSTARTER, without any family members or children in these countries, i am at a loss. I have $3 Million United States Dollars in potential profits from this game, but i am needing to use a US or UK bank account.

I have instructed my lawyer to transfer the money to the first foreigner that will give full account details, and that they should release the fund to him/her, but you will assure me that you will take 50% of the money and give 50% to the orphanages home in your country. Contact my lawyer below with the address for further necessary information’s,

Well, obviously next step is to ask them to send an email with a picture of themselves holding a piece of cardboard I mean their RenPy game.

Alternatively, you could e-mail them back something like this:

Dear Spammer,

You are aware that indiegogo does pretty much the same only it also accepts PayPal right? You now owe me six million dollars for this consultation as well as your immortal soul.
