g-collections was a different company until recently.

peachprincess and jlist have always had the same owners but different targeting. pp is just for the games stuff. lumping pp and jlist together would be a *mess* marketingwise, it wouldn't make any sense at all.

g-coll is now the same as PP but didn't used to be (they bought it after the original owners had some money trouble), so it maintains a separate presence to reassure people who became familiar with it as g-coll.

not that mysterious really.

I think that they also want to distinguish between Peach Princess and G-Collections based on the editorial directions of the two companies. The list of games that PP has chosen to translate has been... well, odd to say the least.

As best as I can tell, the J-List Zaibatsu* consists of:

- J-List/J-Box (Retail distribution of all sorts of stuff.)
- PCR Distributing Co. (Wholesale distributing of clothes and games.)
- Peach Princess
- G-Collections
- JAST-USA

There may be more elements I do not know about. For example, at otakon, CuriousFactory/Blade was in the same panels as Peter Payne, who is the owner of the above.

* Said jokingly.

From my understanding, currently there are more or less only 3 different bgame distributors:
- The J-List Zaibatsu
- Hirameki
- Kitty Media
To make it confusing, Hirameki and Kitty sell their games also through J-List's websites.

Also, it would be interesting to make a list of the partners of the companies. J-Coll had CD Bros which is ZyX, Angel Smile, DO etc,.. and PP had Crowd and Will/SB, and so on. Hirameki had Nitroplus, KID, it could be a nice list. Also, some of them are just distributors, not makers.

I guess so, but it's like distinguishing between 81% cacao chocolate and 76% cacao chocolate.

I could find good games in both PP and the late GColl releases, and of course also bad titles as well - but I don't think I've spotted a direction that could be relevant - Hirameki isn't all that different either, but they do distinguish themselves by having no hentai - they also have a few good games, but Amusement Park, DayOfLove and so on are your classic bishoujo games, just without the hentai. But still, Hirameki is the only real alternative, even though I don't think it's enough to polarize the majority of the fans.

Well, for one thing. most of PP's games have a female POV character. (WC, the various X-changes, Doushin) PP also has a couple of "What were you thinking?" titles, like WC, X-Change, and Doushin, where G-C had less of those.

(Much of this could have to do with who PP works with in Japan.)

I don't have anything big against censored or chopped versions - in fact in one case, Phantom Of Inferno, it did the game good.

And if anything, I wouldn't blame PP or Hirameki, but the original companies that allowed them to cut the scenes out. At the end of the day, they had the license and they could have said no - but they didn't. They wanted to reach a new market and that's the price.

But again, I don't think that Western audience should have the exact same thing. If some of the scenes are disturbing, I don't want to see them. There are several Japanese works that have too much sexual brutality and too little age of their characters for the West to stomach. And it's not criticizing the West's moral standards, it's actually praising them.

In the world of internet forums of course it's easy to write about total artistic freedom, but in reality you pick up a parcel from the post office and inside that 9-year old Hisui is drawing virgin blood and you carry the CD in your bag home, passing other people and in my case a primary school - and then it's just disgusting and nothing else.

As a female , I do have mixed feelings when I play official bishoujo / hentai games.

Not bishoujo but I was ticked when I realized that they made some changes to one ( ? ) of the Fatal Frame games. ( The main character is more youthful / cute in the Japanese version and it's not like she ever has to run naked in the games or anything so it ticks me off a little that they matured her in the American version. ) It makes me mad when they mess with Anime and other things too just because they're afraid it won't sell well if they don't dumb it down or take out / change parts to suit the masses.

If there is a way , instead of taking them out , why can't they
just have an option for the more disturbing scenes to be heavily censored or something? ( that way...people who'd actually wanna see those scenes can see them while others can simply play through with the more "disturbing" bits heavily censored... )

Of course , I'd be happy if Japanese companies / creators would realize that games with totally consensual sex would sell just as well as games with non-consensual sex.

But , if I were that sort of girl - with rape fantasies or whatever , I'd be understandably ticked that the rape scenes were taken out or messed with in any way.

There was a LOOOOT of yelling about the x-change problem. Personally I don't care if something is cut because it was Too Extreme, provided it's made really seriously clear ahead of time that it's being cut, so that you don't pay for it expecting X and then not get it, and that it doesn't make a big difference in the gameplay experience.

From what I understand of Jewel Knights, the inappropriate character probably couldn't be removed without seriously impacting the gameplay - which is why they're just burying that game and not printing it anymore, iirc?

If it's just one scene, I can go along with removing it. Just as long as everyone knows what's been done so nobody's disappointed.

Exactly. It's totally unfair to advertise a game as a translation of the original and cut bits out without telling people. If you're abridging, you gotta let folks know! :)

(Me, I'm not into X-Change, I don't have the game.)

The only thing I know about english translated is that all their girls are legal(18, no matter the size).

Or that one of the owner, Peter Payne, got blacklisted from a certain convention for selling a h-doujin to an underage girl.
