I would've probably done the same thing.
... Or rather, I wouldn't have bought Vista in the first place. From what I can gather, the performance of graphic intensive applications (read: games) actually seem to be lower on Vista than on XP, not to mention all of the incompatibility issues I've been hearing about from various sources. I guess those will be fixed sooner or later, but right now I'm not about to upgrade to an inferior system just because "Ohhh shiny graphics and smart widgets!!11"

It took until Service Pack 2 before XP was usable, so it doesn't surprise me that Vista was prematurely released.
Also, here's some food for thought:
Apple release schedule since 2000: Released Mac OS X 10.0, Released Mac OS X 10.1, Released Mac OS X 10.2, Released Mac OS X 10.3, Released Mac OS X 10.4, Announced Mac OS X 10.5 for this year
Microsoft release schedule since 2000: Windows ME escaped, Released Windows XP, Released Windows Vista
I like my Mac. Until I want to play games...

I've heard this cited before, but I really don't understand it - what was wrong with WinXP that SP2 fixed? If anything, the only thing I noticed change in SP2 was that they simplified the WiFi setup windows to the point that they were nearly useless...NetGenSuperstar wrote:It took until Service Pack 2 before XP was usable, so it doesn't surprise me that Vista was prematurely released.
Given what it was replacing - 98 and ME - I'd have said XP was 'usable' right from day one, it was orders of magnitude more stable than either of those predecessors. Maybe SP2 was coincidentally how long it took for people to give up on their old 16-bit DOS applications that no longer ran? I guess in gaming terms that makes sense, 'cause by then all the games that didn't run on XP would be old enough news for people to have forgotten about them...

On my PC, SP2 seems to crash much less frequently, and less annoyingly. Sometimes I can actually stop my PC from crashing by shutting down the culprit program; that seemed to work very rarely before SP2.Jake wrote:I've heard this cited before, but I really don't understand it - what was wrong with WinXP that SP2 fixed?NetGenSuperstar wrote:It took until Service Pack 2 before XP was usable, so it doesn't surprise me that Vista was prematurely released.
I wouldn't know about the WiFi thing, but I've heard the support was never very good, anyway.

and what about dosbox? :pmugenjohncel wrote:Problem is... there are still people who love to play those old games (like me... believe it or not I still have copies of the Indiana Jones point and click adventure games, Dune II and prince of persia... ah shift + L to skip level and I play them once in a while or when I'm really, really bored) and windows XP compatibility thingy didn't solve me problems.Maybe SP2 was coincidentally how long it took for people to give up on their old 16-bit DOS applications that no longer ran? My options... First is dual boot, second is purchase a high end PC and install windows XP in it then install windows 98 on the old one.
Nah!... just ranting...

It's freeware ^_^.
Recently the 0.7 version was released, so that should be the latest.
For Windows http://sourceforge.net/project/download ... mirror=ovh
It takes a tiny bit of getting used to, but no problem, if I can do it, anyone can. You can also later make a batch file with the commands you want to execute - such as mounting a dos drive and so, so for instance my batch gets me straight to Norton Commander ^_^.

Or you can use frontend like D.O.G. to make settings easier.mikey wrote:It takes a tiny bit of getting used to, but no problem, if I can do it, anyone can. I used to work with some other one, but yes, a frontend is a good option, especially when you want to have special memory settings and such. My start batch is like this:denzil wrote:Or you can use frontend like D.O.G. to make settings easier.mikey wrote:It takes a tiny bit of getting used to, but no problem, if I can do it, anyone can. Code: Select all
@echo off
@cd dos
@dosbox -fullscreen -c "mount C: C:\dosdrive" -c "C:" -c "cls" -c "cd nc" -c "nc"
@cd..
