Photoshop CS6... should I buy it?

#1 Post by mugenjohncel » Sun Aug 18, 2013 3:27 am

OK this will be a pretty major investment for me and I'm going to need your help Lemmasoft but first the story...

I'm a heavy Photoshop 7 user... it's old, outdated but I known it like the back of my hand and I can say with confidence that I can produce and rival some of the more decent works out there using only Photoshop 7... I have emotional attachment to Photoshop 7... It was the first software I purchased using my own saved money... the first storyboard that got me hired on my first "TRUE" job at McCann Erickson was made in Photoshop 7... I moved up the ranks because of Photoshop 7 and drew the last mockups and storyboards on my last project as a professional Graphic Artist / Project Manager for a TV Commercial in Photoshop 7 before being forced to retire early.

And even now, I still use Photoshop 7 on OELVN's, hobbies... almost everything...

My life has reached a stage where all my business ventures are now stable enough and can go on without my daily intervention not to mention that I regained roughly 80% or more of my previous dominant hand/motor functions so I was thinking of going out of retirement and going back into being an active Graphic Artist just to add spice to my life.

Unfortunately, things aren't quite the same since the last time I left the scene... I see Elementary kids who are pretty much on par with my skills, High School kids who can program their own webpages and some even go as far as make amazing movies and special effects using Premiere and After Effects most likely using pirated software copies... something that I can only dream of currently... and you know what... Uncle Mugen is not gonna sit here silently... I may be old but I still can learn new tricks...

I already own a copy of CS4... in all honesty... it's so alien to me that I still have to switch between it and Photoshop 7 just to get the job done... but I am more than eager to learn the new stuff so I too can be as cool as the young people...

And now we reach the most important part... Is it worth it to buy CS6 or shall I stick with what I have (Photoshop 7, CS4) and what would I be missing if I do not buy CS6...

Uncle Mugen will be waiting for your warm replies...

Why use any version of Photoshop after CS2?

I was a heavy photoshop7 users too but as the trend goes and everything gets updated so quickly, I find myself having to keep learning and get adapted to new things despite how much I am reluctant/lazy to do so.

I'm not 100% sure about the new CS6 too as I just started using it but...In compare to photoshop 7 and CS6 or CS4, CS6 has...
-Rotation tool (I think CS4/5 already had that though)
-Auto saving (I think previous version had that already too)
-Clipping image above a folder
-Cool(?) dark skin unlike the old photoshops which were grey/silver
-Auto image sharpening when you resize your image
-More filler effects...

Personally I think that you don't need to get the latest version if you are content with your current version.

While it would certainly help to learn enough of CS4 so that you can do all your work solely in that program, I don't think it's worth upgrading to CS6 if you are strapped for cash - the program was not changed by a huge degree. However, you should be able to get an "upgrade discount" if you own a previous version, unless I'm mistaken.

There are a load of useful features in the new Photoshop. For someone used to the new version, CS2 feels... ancient?

Things to consider other than the software's features:
  • Any new tutorials are going to reference newer versions of software.
  • Any new custom plugins / whatevers are going to be for newer versions of software.
  • Any hardware made after your software's support life-cycle probably won't be supported. So if your software was made before quad core processors, it probably won't be able to harness that.
Most of my software I just leave as is, the only thing I bother staying updated with is Blender because it changes so quickly, often with big feature additions or optimisations. I remember switching from Blender 2.49 to 2.64 (or whatever) was frustrating at first because it's like "...where the hell is everything?!" or "why can't I do X -- I could do it in the older version!". But most of the time when software is updated it's an improvement (unless literally everybody is complaining about it -- that's probably a bad sign) and if you give it a chance you might find you like it more than the older version.

I made the move from Photoshop 7 to CS3. In the end, I'm glad I made the switch. However, if you already have CS4, I think you're fine with that. I'm not sure what features were added from CS4 to CS6, but what you can do is test out a free trial? (Do they have 30-day free trials for that?) See what the advantages and disadvantages are.

Anyway, I'd dip my feet into CS4. I went from MSPaint--->Corel Painter--->Opencanvas 2--->Photoshop 7--->Photoshop CS3 since I first started drawing digitally. It may be frustrating at first, but slowly and steadily you'll adapt!

I plan to continue using CS2 for as long as possible. I love the interface, the features, the image filters, and everything!

If you don't buy Photoshop now, Adobe will erase Photoshop from all markets other than their cloud in a near future.

What's your source? I saw contrary info.

http://blogs.adobe.com/photoshopdotcom/ ... op-cc.html
Q: Can I still buy a boxed/perpetual version of Photoshop?

A: Photoshop CS6 is still available for purchase as a perpetual software license, via electronic download from Adobe.com and authorized resellers. The Photoshop team will provide bug fixes and security updates for Photoshop CS6 while it is still available for purchase. New features and all the other Creative Cloud services, however, will not be added to Photoshop CS6.

Adobe and authorized resellers are no longer selling boxed software, as the company has moved to delivering features and services on a more continuous basis via Photoshop CC. See “Breaking from Tradition: Photoshop CC.”

OAO Why didn't I know that?! I've been wanting something like this since forever ;w; Uuugh, I'm a CS3 user, but now I want CS6 XD It's a pretty neat version, I use it at uni, though it has some features that also really annoy me and may take some time to get used to. @A@

I think its worth owning. CS6 is the last photoshop product you will be able to own. Every photoshop from CS6 on will be "leased" from adobe cloud. When you dont pay them (yearly or monthly?) the software will stop working.
