Some Questions For Japanese Members

#1 Post by kara24601 » Tue Jul 17, 2007 11:41 pm

Hello. I don't "know" everybody here....and I am unsure how many of the members here are from Japan. Soo...um...hi...and sorry I never said hi until just now. I would like to get to know you all better and hopefully we can be friends. I'm sorry to start off with this subject but....I want to know....
How do you feel about the term "Japs"? I know that it's an offensive term but one time I read that (supposedly) most Japanese themselves don't get offended by it. Although I'm not Japanese it makes me mad when people use it then it makes me even madder when people think just because somebody's not Japanese, they shouldn't be offended if they use that word.
Worse is when people say that anyone who is not Japanese , Black , ect. doesn't have the right to be offended if somebody uses bad words just because they are not Japanese or Black or whatever. I don't understand why a Japanese person would not be offended.
I think "But the word Japanese takes too long to type out" and such are pathetic excuses to go ahead and use that word. Who agrees with me?
So, please enlighten me if you are Japanese and don't feel it's a big deal.

Also , how do you feel about Anime and other Japanese things becoming so widespread?
I'm surprised that I didn't think to post on something like this earlier. Heh.

How do you feel about the term "otaku"?
Last time I saw anything about it , it is still something to avoid saying over in Japan but people like me use it as a sort of badge of honor and don't mean anything hurtful by it.
It's really disappointing sometimes , knowing that I shouldn't use that term or be very careful about using it if I ever get the chance to visit Japan.

That is all I can think of at the moment....

would you believe? 私は日本語である

nah... just replying coz I was the last one who used the term japs. I didn't mean to be racist or anything with that though. Just the product of a lazy mind.
How do you make your games? I see. Thank you for the prompt replies, but it is my considered opinion that you're doing it wrong inefficiently because I am a perfushenal professional. Do it my way this way and we can all ascend VN Nirvana together while allowing me to stroke my ego you will improve much faster. Also, please don't forget to thank me for this constructive critique or I will cry and bore you to death respond appropriately with a tl;dr rant discourse of epic adequately lengthy proportions. - Sarcasm Veiled in Euphemism: Secrets of Forum Civility by lordcloudx (Coming soon to an online ebook near you.)

AAAAHHHHHHHH

*is a second-year Japanese language student going to study abroad in Kyoto in spring 2008*

My Japanese is zen zen jouzu ja nai (sorry, my work computer can't do Japanese fonts, I'll have to wait until I get home to type in Japanese) but I can get around. Unfortunately, kara, I can't answer your question from the perspective of a Japanese person because I'm a caucasian American. But, I can say...

--I consider "Jap" to be an offensive term.
--The word "otaku" is a derisive insult to most Japanese people. It means a fanatic in general and doesn't have anything specific to do with anime or video games. Some people may have "reclaimed" the word the way that some racial minorities in have "reclaimed" English racial slurs, but I'm not 100% positive on that point...

Also, it's possible that a book may nihongo de aru, but a person cannot do so.
"HOLD ON TIGHT" ~ Outfits and expressions, where art thou? And why does Elsa's face look so awful??? *bangs head in*

You're right on both points. I think the negativity stems from how much the Japanese value social conformity. The word itself isn't derogatory and is openly used. However, such a label bears a negative connotation (perhaps "homosexual" has a similar stigma in certain places).
Some people may have "reclaimed" the word the way that some racial minorities in have "reclaimed" English racial slurs, but I'm not 100% positive on that point...
From what I see online, anime otaku identify themselves as such all the time. Even some involved with anime (certain products) or bishoujo game production describe their line of work as the otaku industry.

Some who proudly bear the label would never reveal who they really are (you don't want to be branded a loser/troublemaker/whacko by acquaintances or employers. For instance, at a recent "otaku rights" demonstration, some participants covered their faces), but it isn't like actual otaku have a problem with it.

At any rate, I'm assuming that the classification would be most offensive to:

a) those who aren't otaku (and who probably look down on the lifestyle like 99% of the population)
b) otaku (and those sharing similar interests) who want to keep their activities a secret
