Hi qirien! Thanks for the response! =D
Yeah, I understand that giving away another chapter would be helpful, because as a gamer myself, I rarely buy things unless I'm absolutely positive I want to spend money on it. At the same time, that's a lot of free stuff. I don't know about this, I'd have to run it by my friend.
We wanted to sell the game as individual character routes (hence the creation of this thread ^__^) because the game is actually pretty long. Originally, we were planning on having all the characters' routes in one game, but with the length and size of the project, it became too massive, and my friend was afraid that there would be programming errors or crash moments in the game.
This is why we are opting to do character routes instead. In character routes, we can have all of the chapters per individual character, instead of having one massive story with 3 guys to keep up with.
My friend is a huge Voltage fan, so the audience will probably include (or will try to include) Voltage gamers. The reason we didn't do more than 3 characters is because:
1) this is both my friend and I's first game, so we didn't want to bite off more than we can chew for our first project; 3 characters is already somewhat of a handful for us
2) While Voltage has many characters, they are all based off of personality types. We wanted to avoid these cliché personality types, so that kinda limited what we needed to work with. It gives us more creativity power to make the characters however we like, but reason 1 refers to why we didn't choose to make so many routes
3) I don't want to give out any spoilers, but basically the characters in our game will eventually interact with each other because their stories will meet up. Having a ton of characters makes it difficult to create character connections like that, and too many connections makes the events seem unnatural
And lol, yeah, I agree with your last sentence. However, we also know that we can't please everyone. By having individual routes, we hope to at least create some interest among otome gamers, Voltage-esque gamers, general VN players, and casual gamers. Interest from anyone else is highly desired, but if they are not interested, it's ok.
For casual gamers, hopefully they will buy at least 1 route that they really like. If people don't buy all the routes, that's ok, just as long as they at least play one of the routes. =)
What do you think of individual character stories for otome?
