Re: LSF @ 5 - Celebrations
I'd like to attend too, if the timezone allows it ^^ Because of certain circumstances I don't know yet if I will be free that day, but I hope so.
Irc sounds fine for me, html based or not.

Re: LSF @ 5 - Celebrations
IRC doesn't differ much from forum, it's still "real time" posting, but if a channel is set I won't mind visiting a bit.
Anyone recommend an internet applet to use IRC without downloading a client?

Re: LSF @ 5 - Celebrations
I'm considering registering an #renpy channel with freenode, as they seem to be a fairly legit outfit... as best as I can tell, they don't have the various warez channels of some of the other networks. I've submitted a request to register #renpy, we'll see what happens there.

On the theory that boldness beats paralysis by analysis, I've gone ahead and registered #renpy on freenode.
I'm there, as are Enerccio and DrakeNavarone. You can join in advance of the big celebration. The details are as follows:
Channel: #renpy
Server: irc.freenode.net
There's also a java client at http://java.freenode.net , which I haven't actually tried, but seems to work well enough.

Re: LSF @ 5 - Celebrations
I tried the Java client and it works for me (I met FIA, Ignosco and Hime), so I'm good to go on Saturday.

It was mentioned in-channel sometime yesterday that it would be.mugenjohncel wrote:I do strongly suggest that this channel be semi-permanent. This could be useful for people making collaborations...
...I just hope that it doesn't distract people too much from actually working on their games. I know I only managed about a hundred lines of C# last night... :/

Re: LSF @ 5 - Celebrations
Yeah, my plan is to make it semi-permanent, but to reevaluate it after a month or so. If people use it for entirely off-topic stuff, with little on-topic use, I may shut it down. OTOH, if there's actual game-making going on, then it makes sense to use it.

BEWM!
As is popular at the moment, here's something I've cobbled together. No people in it though. I can't draw and I don't have any artists.
Also, what is this IRC thing and how do I work it?

Sombering thought, but 5 years is really important, especially in this digital age.

the guys who gave us Mizuiro. I also realized these folks, as well as the folks at insani, are of the same generation of anime fandom (the ones who still remember elite-fansubs). We're in our late twenties now, which means getting busier which means retiring from some hobbies. People can remain lifelong fans, but they can't be otakus forever (I know...I'm feeling the pressure to change my lifestyle more than ever).
So that's the legacy of the transition generation who witnessed firsthand VHS to bilingual anime DVDs, irc, the birth of bittorrent, and the golden years of visual novels translated to english with al|together and Hirameki.

The next milestone is 10 years, and it's assumed by then that more than half of the people here would have moved on to other things... that's life....some statistics seem to say that on average, the length of time that someone who starts playing visual novels... , until they stop ..., is roughly 5 years.
