Definitely, don't let the idea of "too old for college" hold you back. If you really want to do this, go for it! Keep in mind, too, that different colleges have different average ages. I've been looking at colleges myself lately (though I'll be going right out of high school), and I found that college.sparknotes.com will give you the percent of students under 21 for most colleges. I've seen everything from 17% to 93% (that was MIT, though), but it seems that most have a decent amount over 21. So, you might want to look up wherever you're planning to go to get a better idea of the ages there.

Note that this is encouragement coming from someone who will probably be one of the youngest in college (turning 18 September of my first year), and would see nothing wrong with sharing the classroom with someone your age.

OK it's offical....I am now back in the college world. Going to take just one class to start - and I won't be able to go full time anyway because of work - but....taking the steps to get the degree :)

Ahh... Sounds like it'll be an adventure. It'll have its twists and bumps all right, but in the end, you'll be able to look back and laugh. ^_^

Good luck, it's going to be quite tough I imagine. But I guess these are the real tests where people can show what they are made of. A quick story to explain:

Yesterday, I watched the figure skating world championships, and Mao Asada won. Which is fine, as she is the wonder child (currently 17 or something) - I distinctively remember watching the winter olympics and the German commentators talked about her being the first one to perfom a combination of triple axels or something like that - but that she was too young to go to the olympics and it was a shame and so on.

Well... it wasn't. I mean she ISN'T a great athlete and all that. Well, she is, but not really. Because I think it's very easy to be great when you are 13 and your parents/coach tell you what you need to do and you do it. Mao Asada at the time she did those spectacular jumps wasn't making a great sporting achievement - she was a showcase for the coaches - she showed what you can do with a small girl.

It's been a figure skating problem ever since ever - teenagers, especially younger ones would perform better jumps and what have you due to something that has to do with the centre of gravity which changes when going from girl to a more womanly figure. Also, there was criticism that young skaters do not realize where they are, and feel less stress since they don't understand the importance of what they are doing. When you're older, your mind is complicated, you feel more stress, and you are more likely to fail than a rigorously trained youngster who has no friends and has been deprived of her childhood (according to cliches).

It doesn't matter - the point is simply that I really have a lot of respect for people who do this kind of thing (late university, with a fulltime job). It's definitely MUCH harder to do than going the typical way, supported by parents. It's much harder to sustain as well - and being at the start line, I can imagine the prospect of seeing this through can seem daunting. But what I wanted to say was this - even though some people may glorify the achievements of people like Mao (and it is a great achievement), actually finishing a university (college, I don't know the difference) while in the normal day-to-day flow of things will be an achievement that's much, much greater. So, lots of respect, for signing up, for going for it, and lots of luck, patience and motivation.

OK class is about a third of the way through....and I'm surprising myself a little with how well I'm doing! As of tonight I have a 93%...I was hoping to do well but this was a <pleasant> surprise! Guess the third time truly is the charm :)

You'll be fine. When I attempted college, there were people that were in there 50s and 60s taking classes AND teaching classes. Just because you are 34 or whatever doesn't mean college is out of the picture.

It just means that you are older than most of your peers, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Just remember : you are only as old as you feel. You feel like a young, hot twenty-something, BAM, you are a hot, young twenty-something. You feel like a 2.5 billion year old entity who probably has seen more stuff than most people can comprehend, BAM, you are a 2.5 billion year old entity who probably has seen more stuff than most people can comprehend...

...

And that would make you like me ^_^

...

So in other words, just decide what age you want to feel, and you are that age. It is a simple act of mind over matter; people do it all the time without realizing it.

And enjoy college. It can be one hell of a ride...

I was unfortunately thrown from it but whatever. I plan on going back in a few years, possibly around 2013 - 2014, or whenever I can fit it it and I am free from my current payee's grasp.

YAYYYYYYYYYY!

I truly think the third time is the charm...I got a B for my Addictions class - and that was a tough one! I honestly thought I was going to be a C on it but I'll definitely take the B! And for my writing class...actually was able to pull off an A!!! Maybe there will be another writer here before too long - ME! I'm taking another writing class to better phrase things and get the most out of writing a paper...taking a psych class <which is my major> too. I won't be able to do more than 2 classes at a time but...this is really exciting, that I'm able to actually concentrate and get decent grades now...this is a FAR cry from when getting a C+ was *a good grade*! Now I KNOW I can get the good grades, and plan on continuing to do so!

Rather happy right now, can't you tell?? :D

There shouldn't be anything wrong with going back to studiying. I think your actions are more normal than you think. A relative of mine who is approaching her 60s had planned to study just so she could feel the feeling of graduating from a college. I think your actions are more reasonable than hers. So keep up the good work.
