Hey all! I know surveys aren't allowed here, but I'd really like to gather some very general info on VN preferences so that I can better plan my next VN to suit the people. Does anyone know where I can distribute the link without violating TOS/rules?

I've looked at the forum mandates, and I think you'd be alright creating a topic that links to a survey hosted somewhere else, provided that the subject is visual novel development and the survey doesn't contain any promotional materials. The best place to post such a topic would probably be in Creator's Discussion, although if the survey is specifically about art, writing, or music, then you could put it in those respective forums. You could also put the link to it in your signature so people see it when you post (which I think you've already done.)

You might be on the safer side if you actually encourage discussion alongside the survey; say, by linking to the survey but also asking a more specific question related to the content of the survey that warrants discussion.

The forum rule in question (Rule 11: Poll-Like Threads) specifically prohibits the creation of poll-like threads, since they take up the board with lots of posts that have no value; these types of threads will often have many pages of posts in them, where each person only posts one time and little to no interaction takes place. Since the rule is designed for keeping these threads out of the forum, a topic that links to the survey while also encouraging discussion should be within the bounds of the forum policy.

That's merely my interpretation of it, though, so you might wait for PyTom or another administrator to show up and give your question a definitive answer.
