Rules
It is worth noting that it's not exactly Summer around the world.

SuNoFES is short for the Summer Novel Festival, an online game jam focused on adventure, interactive fiction, role-playing game, and visual novels. Starts July 1st, ends August 31st, annually. Feel free to start working before the festival begins. No one is required to start their work from scratch unless they want to. If you have any unfinished projects in mind, you're invited to use this festival for completing it. SuNoFES has no judging or prizes - the only rewards are those that come from the challenge and camaraderie with others.

- Takes place during July and August.
- Project must be a new game and have not been published before.
- Adaptations and sequels are okay.
- Releasing a demo is fine.
- Polished works are encouraged. Free from bugs and glitches.
- You can work in teams or by yourself.
- There are no "winners." Anyone who reaches their goal during the festival has completed SuNoFES, though it is encouraged to submit a game.

If you want to be more organized, try out the design document: https://www.dropbox.com/s/dwcsf346o95ym ... .docx?dl=0
Have fun and enjoy the rest of the summer!
Feel free to tweet your development progress at #SuNoFes!

Please note that Adult Content is not allowed such as explicit sexual content, explicit gore, and obscenity.

Feel free to post comments, complaints, concerns, questions, and etcetera here. If you miss this year's festival, there's next year.

You can submit your entry through Itch.io Jam Page, be sure to register or log in.

I might be interested to use this jam to complete my current short project, Colette and Becca. I at least have a good headstart, so it might be able to be released during that time period. However, I have one question about this rule:
Please note that Adult Content is not allowed such as explicit sexual content, explicit gore, and obscenity.
Define "obscenity" under this context. It's a bit of a blanket term. The first thing that comes to mind with that word is heavy swearing. Is that what's meant?
Reader Beware!

Obscenity as in profanity, the use of strong/ vulgar words. Yes, excessive swearing does fit the criteria for obscenity.

I am definitely joining this jam, and one or two more people I know on Twitter are working on their VNs, too.

It's kind of been a bit quiet around it even though it just started, so I just wanted to encourage more people - if you'd like to join with a small project, it's a very relaxed 2-month thing, if you missed NaNoRenO, maybe, this can be a good way of getting that small experimental project done, or finish up something that's been lingering for a while...

So just wanted to bump this, in case anyone is interested. 8)

Wow, this sounds awesome! I started working on a new VN idea recently (my first project, actually!), and I could use the motivation of a month as an end goal!

I agree with your sentiments exactly, mikey :D

Will there be a itch.io like there is one for Nano? Or some other web page to show everyone's work? :3

chocoberrie >> there is a itch.io page, where you'd submit your VN in the end.

And good luck with your project, especially if it's the first, it's the best feeling to finally have made one :)

I'm working on something for SuNoFes - I am going to hopefully get the vast majority of assets done this month then actually code (and write the final text - aaaa writing is really hard) in August.

I'll make a WiP thread in the short games subforum in a few weeks time when I have something to show!

Good luck to everyone taking part!

(Alte, just checking, we can use some swear words when appropriate right? I don't want to accidentally break the rules! hehe - I probably won't even use any swear words, but if it's in character then I might have to!)

Yes, anyone can get away with a couple of swear words here and there. What I asked is try not to make it obvious or excessive. Say having a project title based on swearing.

To extent: not to be used for defamatory or threatening matter.

The reason for adding a new rule is that I have to comply the Acceptable Use Policy from the Web hosting service in order to keep SuNoFES hub running.

Everyone who's participating feel free to share your progress tidbits through twitter hashtag #SuNoFes. Also don't forget to take breaks and good luck!

Hi,

I would love to participate, but VN, I'm working on, suppose to be an episodes, like a few little stories with one main hero. Can I participate with one story/chapter only (hope to get it ready to deadline)?

Cheers!

Oh, since using itch.io to host game jams it's required to register or log in on itch.io in order to join this. That's where anyone can submit their entry.

As far as recruitment goes: if anyone needs help with developing their project related to visual novels or story-based games, post it in the proper category of Recruitment & Services Offered and label it SuNoFES.

Sometimes the rules for recruitment could be overlooked so I'll reiterate.

Recruiting Rules:
  1. Only recruit if you have an actual, clearly defined project you're recruiting for. Don't recruit if you're an organization that may have a project at some time in the future.
  2. Tell people what kind of work you have for them. For commissions, also tell them how much work it will probably be.
  3. Tell people how much work on your project is already complete.
  4. Always open recruitment threads in the correct subforum - Free, Commercial or Paid Work.
If anyone thinks they can find recruitment outside of the forums, go for it!

There's a recent podcast from The Buzz about "Making VNs For A Game Jam" for anyone who would like to know about the flow of visual novels in game jams.
The Buzz wrote:In this episode, Sasquatchii, mikey and Kuiper talk about the specifics of making VNs for a game jam, which rules do and don't apply, and more.
Leave a comment over the thread here for feedback.

Good luck to everyone participating!

I actually joined SuNoFes too, but then I changed my mind because there's something I need to prioritize first and I haven't worked on the story outline.

So, maybe next year. With better preparation. :P
