how about finish games gets the review. then again, this doesn't change anything, because completed game section gets lots of comments. i won't say these are called reviews since people post under 1000 characters. a real review is one that explains the game from the mechanics to the art, easy to read, pictures not required but helpful, and willing to do it because they liked the game not for celebrity stats.

on another forum, there exist a checklist for reviews to be approved. i don't know if you want that in this forum, there might be some problems like developers deceiving players (steam review example), constant bad reviews (other forum problems), etc.

I think the continuation of the mentality we have is fine. If we sectionalize the community and restrict opinions. It will cause the thing that destroys any group of people. Sectionalism!

Like the user posted earlier. Flipping the mentality to "I don't want critique!" Instead of "I want honest critique." Will cause less damage and separation overall.

I think flipping "Honest Critique" to "I don't want critique" would result in less feedback and not more.

Why? Because if I look at a person's sig and see nothing...I don't know if it is because they really want feedback or because they don't know about the button or they were too lazy to but the "I don't want critique button" on their sig. And because the worst thing ever is to give feedback to people who don't want it, the result would be that I would give no one feedback, because I could never be sure who really wanted it.

I don't give a lot of feedback now (except in coding*), but I do feel like if I see an Honest Critique button that I can give that person feedback. And that consent to feedback makes me feel comfortable saying something. In other words, I want positive consent to feedback. If all I get is silence? I actaully don't know if people are consenting and then I'm not going to do it. It would completely stop me from giving feedback.

*Coding is different. Why? First people specifically ask for specific feedback. Also, people don't take coding feedback as personally as they do other things. And so you don't see people going into a depression spiral because you pointed out ways to make their code better.

That is a good point. However, separating them will indefinitely be an issue. America has ha this issue for years! Sectionalism is a pain! No one likes your side because you are [this], or do [this]. It is pitiful child's play. Destroying this sort of Republic we have on the site.

The current state of affairs does not divide people, just tags them. Much like people are marked with their accolades. No one gets divided because fighterA won a trophy. It just lets them know who not to fight

Being marked with the Honest Critique button does not mean we will always recieve it. Just like fighterA will not alway be fought by someone just because of his fighter champion World Cup.

To address people who truly do not want critique. I cannot speak for them. They need to suck it up or remove the button. "Making a statement" is pretty useless on such a friendly and equal community.

Since the Honest Critique button is opt-in, I would hope that the people who have gone through the trouble of putting it in their sig actually want to have feedback. I assume that is the case. If there is no button, I don't make that assumption.

Just say "I would totally play your game if I had the time and money" is not constructive. It does not say almost anything if you do not know the person, so I think who says it could be more helpful than that.

As the OP suggest, it will be better if people say what they think about what they can access (post, demo, f. e. x.).

Sometimes I do not have 3 dollars to buy a game. And I am almost sure that no one is denying this possibility (even the posts when people justify their lack of money here are interesting). But I know people who think is stupid to buy games when they can piracy all the time. They just look to my uncle and say: are you crazy? And sometimes they have the same job and same responsibilities of my uncle. But they spend it in a night. So there is no point in label the OP as a classist except if you want to play the Marxist.

(It is not conclusive but take a look at Brazil in the case of Punch Club.)

@Donmai: Yes

To be fair, it was already taken there. I agree with you though. Little too much focus on the people in the thread, than the issue at hand.

This thread is about to get filled with memes and animated gifs if it keeps up like that.

... the sound responses make me laugh, tho.

Regarding the critique issue, it's been years since the Honest Critique button idea started, but I've personally never seen any change whatsoever. Not in people receiving criticism nor giving it, so in the end I think those who try to encourage a change in attitude can really do nothing but try to be as active as possible in their respective fields, and making sure to show a good example.

Not that I can say too much else because I'm a godawful example, but... hey, things are always easier in theory. I guess.

Fortunately the medium is slowly growing, and we're even starting to see more specialised critique and communities. I think that alone will help with the issue in the long run, and having more creators, and more experienced ones, should also help.

I can relate to that, a lot. I've also not seen much of a change since the introduction of the Honest Critique button.

And about giving more honest critique myself, I would totally do that if I had the time and money. 8)
