Re: The 2008 Lemmy Visual Novel Awards - Results now posted!

#121 Post by EwanG » Mon Feb 23, 2009 2:04 pm

First, my congratulations to all the winners as well. I think 2008 had a fine crop of games!

Now, as for the 2009 competition, I'm wondering if there will be a desire/need to have categories for paid games versus free? With the portals that are coming online and such there's going to be the issue that many of this year's games may not be freely available. That may hamper the chance of a "paid" game getting nominated, and brings up the question of how to get valid votes and judging. For that matter, is it fair for a free game where the author may do much of their own art and programming to be compared to one where several positions were contracted out?

Just some thoughts on the matter from a not totally disinterested source...

After the results are published, I'd like to reveal myself as a member of the jury, and here's how I voted:

BEST OVERALL
The Fucking Question - 5 points
Songs of Araiah - 10 points
Tying Threads - 20 points

Reason: In terms of story, SoA was just perfect. But giving top marks to a KineNo when there is a real VN close behind in everything? Nyet. So, Tying Threads it is.

BEST DRAMA
Dream Chasers - 5
Tying Threads - 10
Songs of Araiah - 20

Reason: See above. A perfect piece of writing, SoA. Actually, DC was the first of the three I played, and my initial feeling was that the others couldn't be better. SoA and TT both proved me wrong.

BEST HUMOR
Real Life - 5
The Fucking Question - 10
Lady Sugarplum's Bad Day - 20

Reason: I couldn't really relate to the humor in RL, and TFQ was too much of an inside joke to work outside the Lemma community. So LSBD was the logical choice.

MOST INNOVATIVE
Yaruge Girl Triona - 5
The Fucking Question - 10
Heart of Fire - 20

Reason: To me, innovation is "thinking outside the box", and only HoF with its somewhat cross-genre approach really hit that spot with me.

FANSERVICE
Real Life - 5
Yaruge Girl Triona - 10
Lady Sugarplum's Bad Day - 20

Reason: LSBD had a funny approach to fanservice without being overly wacky. That goes a long way in my book.

If I recall correctly, these awards are strictly for games that are free to play.

Yes, and I'm suggesting that perhaps it would be worth recognizing paid games as well since it looks like that might be a larger percentage of the overall market in this next year if the portals that are being discussed are opened. Depends on whether the idea is to promote excellence in general, or excellence in the free community. I can certainly see a need for both. But again, I'm not exactly a disinterested person :D

The reason why commercial games are excluded from Lemmys because they are commercial games. Not everyone will be able to purchase them just to evaluate them for the awards. It might prove to be a disadvantage considering the free games are easily accessible.

Congratulations! :D I'm happy to say I agree with many of the winners. And it looks like this competition already works a nice motivator to have people work on their games for next year :P

Whew... Looks like the world is saved from your evil plans, eh Mugen?

Do you really have a trademark on evil plans? And do you actually intend to protect it?
