Re: Is this yaoi?

#16 Post by baileykun »

I'm gonna just going to try to help here the best I can. My credentials? Uhhh, I'm a bi guy and I read a lot of LGBT manga.

Yaoi: Smut. It stands for a phrase that can kinda be summed up as this has no real plot. (Yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi./No climax, no point, no meaning.) English people just plaster this phrase on everything thinking it is interchangeable with BL. Maybe it is now? But I've never see it used that way in Japanese media. I'd be hesitant to use this if my game isn't a nukige personally.

BL: Boy's love is often, but not always written by women for women. This has a plot though unlike the previously mentioned yaoi. May or may not have sexual content.

Yabara: A hybrid of BL with a Bara style twist. So the guys are more muscular, but still not usually peak hugeness like a lot of bara. Still seems story drive?

Bara: Gay men's manga written by gay men. Traces back, if I remember correctly to a magazine that also coined the term Yuri for it's lesbian manga. Roses and Lilies are the namesakes here. I think they tend to be porn heavy, but I'm not into beefy guys so I'll leave that for someone else to answer,

My conclusive advise? Don't let labels reign you in. If something fits then go ahead and use it. If not, then just use a term like Gay or LGBT.
