China Culture Shock

#1 Post by binko » Sun Oct 16, 2005 9:51 am

[MOD NOTE: I was alerted to this post by a forum member. I deleted it, not due to its content (though skewed and unpopular), but because it was a copy-and-paste rant that has appeared on several forums in the past. Please come up with your own thoughts and words when you post. I believe in free speech and tend to defend one's right to unpopular opinions. However, readers of this forum deserve more than stock rant posts.

Regarding content, if such hateful posts become more common in the future, they will be locked or deleted since they are contrary to the spirit of the forum.

有點驚訝在這裡看到這種充滿歧視而不負責任的發言.

If you copy/paste some of the quotes from the post into google, you'll find other forums containing the same text, being submitted recently.

*has no idea what magi is saying*

I didn't see the original post, but given what BL said it's probably just as well. I have to agree that posts that are hateful have no business here. Posts that are rants generally target something that the person doesn't like and uses the rant to make their feelings known...but generally everyone who reads said rant thinks *what's his problem?*

When I joined last year, it was because I liked the topics, and everyone that was posting seemed really positive and varied - and I like that =) And that hasn't changed a whit since I started posting...everyone is still helpful and positive. =)

I actually thought it hilarious that as part of a massive anti-china rant, the original racist actually managed to criticise them for the lack of easy availability of bacon bits and fritos.

I have to agree with BL... severely hateful posting isn't what this forum is for.
(note to self: remind D. Zeta of that handy piece of information...)

I believe that person has the right to write what he/she wrote here, but I also believe this is not the place. As a privately-owned forum, we also have the right to keep hateful speech out of here. If that person wants to share ideas on his/her privately owned property, nothing is stopping it.

Let's also remember, however, that it was a copy-and-paste message that has been popping up on a lot of forums, essentially making it spam.

*a little somber*... why... why do people have to write stuff like that? It wasn't meant to inspire discussion- which is what Internet forums are for... It was simply hurtful...
However, *cheers up a bit* I am glad to see that others are as offended as they are by that. It's comforting to know that such speech will not be tolerated here. So thanks BL, for making these forums a pleasant place to visit ^_^

Well, make the long story short, he basically posted something along the line of "the Chinese people are gay because..." Then go on to say just about a list (often with paragraph of its own) of almost a hundreds rents that this person has with the same misinformed reasoning. It is so obvious troll that its almost not funny.

Personally, I would love to see that someone get rip apart in a public forums over something like this, but this forums apparently is of no consequence to him, so why should we give someone like that any benefit of having such a platform?

OK now that I know what the rant said (or at least the gist of it. thanx magi :)) I am positive that it had no business in this forum. Rants such as that...when something like that comes along, it's better than people don't see it because it's such a skewed view without actual knowledge of what they are talking about. By that, I mean, has the person met a lot of Chinese people, spent time in China, etc? Most likely not.
