[WIP] Dynamic Detective - An Ace Attorney Parody

#1 Post by The Director »

Are you a fan of Ace Attorney? Are you mad that they're not releasing Ace Attorney Investigations 2 to America? The know this - Its up to the fans to continue this great series!

In all honesty... I don't know if they're going to make more AA games, or if they do they'll bring them to the shores of other countries. But I will always be a true AA fan and hope for the best that they will bring out the games to the shores of (insert name of your country here ____________), cause this is like stab in the back for all the loyal fans to this game franchise.

And, since AAI2 isn't going to be brought out of Japan, I figure that I should just make my own mystery game/visual novel in the style of the Ace Attorney Series - Dynamic Detective! So, to all fans of Phoenix Wright, I urge you to please help with this project! Lend your support and show that we can make an awesome game on par with AA!

We're still looking for people to help with programming, drawing backgrounds, script writing (although we've got the outline done and a good portion of the script done) and looking for other skills to help with the first case. So if you're interested, please PM me and we'll see

Dynamic Detective
Case 1 - Spin Sins
Overview: 75%
Script: 36%
Character Designs: 65%
Programming: 25%

As for a summary of the first chapter -

The MC wakes up in a weird location, his head in pain and his memory foggy, he can’t even remember his own name. As he starts to regain his senses, he seems to realize that he’s in some sort of storeroom several records on shelves and on the floor with a weird smell filling the air… Apparently it’s the smell of blood, and only a few feet away from where he woke up – There’s a young woman on the ground with blood pooling under her head. Like almost any other sane person, the MC runs to the woman and tries to see if she’s alright.

Unfortunately, as soon as he reaches the body he gets discovered with the body by a small guy(or is it a girl?) – Kuroi, and is immediately forced to the ground by one Cruger Hund, who’s yelling that Ansel did the deed of taking the girl’s life. A few minutes later, the MC gets dragged out from the storeroom and he realizes that he’s in some sort of record store (criticizing in his mind that it seems like it’s a rare occurrence to actually find nowadays), but he can’t think about that since he’s being thrown to the floor by Hund, who’s still spouting that the MC killed that girl. The MC looks around on his position on the floor and sees that there are five other people around – There’s that guy, Hund. A small guy (or is it a girl?) – Kuroi. Next there’s the loud girl – Furui. An older gentleman – Hyde Vayne. And another girl, a punk rocker girl.

Hund starts saying that this guy (The MC) killed his girlfriend and barks orders at people to call the police and such. However, Hyde interjects by saying that he’s a plains-clothed detective and tells Hund to calm down before he smacks him upside the head. A few moments later, Hyde has called the police and requests that everyone in the store please remain here, he intends to get to the bottom of this. And he starts off by standing in front of the backroom, wishing to preserve the crime scene while his colleagues arrive on the scene. A few moments later, MC's standing in the corner of the room, trying to gather his thoughts while trying to ignore the glares that Hund and the punk girl are shooting him.

‘Murder? Did I murder that poor girl? I can’t remember…’

Just as the MC keeps thinking, he gets called over by Detective Hyde, referring the MC as several femine anime and video game characters. A little annoyed, the MC complies walks over to the Detective, who tells the MC that his situation isn’t looking good and has to take his testimony. Apparently, Hyde understands that things can get caught up in the heat of the moment and that Hund probably took things a bit too far… After all, his girlfriend was just killed. And realizing something, Hyde asks for the MC's name, he forgot to ask it when he asked for the other peoples’ names.

Its then that the MC realizes something…

He can’t remember his name! He can’t remember anything about himself!

So, it’s a race against the clock to see if the MC can clear his name of this murder and possibly find out who he is!

It may sound cliched, but we're hoping to make fun of the good old amnesia cliched (and don't forget, they used that in the first case of the second Ace Attorney game).

I can see the appeal of this. It will definitely attract Phoenix Wright fans and since the cast is all original (only the format is the same), it might attract people that never played the games too.
Creating a game on par with PW or AJ will be a long task but Ren'py can do it no problem!

I hope the other characters make jokes about amnesia (and other clichés) because an amnesiac character is something that has been done to death in stories from all over the world 8) .
Oh, since the main character doesn't remember his name, can the player make up one name for him? It would be cute lol.

I whole-heartedly agree, I love the AA games, and I've wanted to make a game like this for a long time.

As for the amnesia jokes, even the MC chastises himself about how he fell into one of the blandest cliches of all time... But we go with more angles with the MC as well.

And as for the name of the MC, he does have an official name, but I would love to allow people to make their own name for the MC. For some reason, I can see people using the name Donut... For the reason, this is my concept of the MC.

I believe there someone (is it lorcloudx) here made an AA game using RenPy. Perhaps you could talk to him about several things?

if you mean "Attorney D", that was by F.I.A., and I wouldn't suggest using that as an example as it was made in too linear a fashion.

If it helps at all, I posted the prototype I made for an AA parody a while ago:

Wow, that's pretty good, it might work well, and I'd like to use this prototype, so yeah.

In any case, I've got the other characters that you'll be seeing in the first case. Tell me what you all think.

Cruger Hund

Kuroi Hitsuji

Furui Koetetsu

Sylvia Deacon

And Detective Hyde Vayne

Still looking for someone in backgrounds and with some parts of the script. I actually plan on giving the player the choice of who to choose as your 'investigating partner' like how Maya was to Phoenix, Trucy to Apollo, and Kay/Gumshoe to Edgeworth.

Hey everyone! I thought I'd let everyone know that the project is really about to take off. I found a couple of other writers who are interested, and I've actually taken the chance to try my hand at making a CG, now, this is just a work in progress.

So, enjoy the little spoiler as well as the line that's said before its played.

"Ah'm not gunna jus' punch ya... Ah'm gunna summon da moon and punch ya straight to it!"

Image

Of course, summoning the moon is just for a dramatic effect.

And we're still looking for people who are interested in helping out, so don't be shy.

Yep, this project is still alive, college can be quite taxing. But with the script of the first case of this game almost finished, the game's first case set to be done by next Feburary.

Still looking for a background artist though. All we'd need are three-four images. So yeah, if anyone's interested let me know.

Have a good day.

1. I too am upset that AAI2 is not being released outside of Japan. However, last I heard, they were reconsidering.
2. Your art style looks like that of shounen anime for younger kids. I like it, it looks fun and the colors are also pretty nice. Are you a fan of Pokemon or Yugioh or something? (It really reminds me of those types of shows.) I only suggest shading darker; the shadows are practically invisible.
3. Have you considered using a dedicated casemaker, like PyWri--actually, here's a few. Maybe it might be easier than using Ren'Py. (Although, I have coded a really sloppy investigation sequence in Ren'Py before...)

1) Yeah, but it'll probably be on the 3DS -shrugs-.
2) Yeah, I am a fan of the Yu-Gi-Oh! series (the same used to be true for pokemon, but... -shrugs again-) And these are older drawings, and I'm getting better! Thanks for the advice
3) And I have, but I wanted to allow the players to take different paths on the investigation. I love the Ace Attorney series, but it always seemed too contour with me, and I figured that Ren-py would be better than Pywright (besides, I have a little experience with Ren-py so its a little easier). But that isn't to say that it isn't a bad idea for me to go with that. Thanks!

And as an added bonus, I've updated the picture of our Protagonist.

Image

Kinda reminds me a cross between Chuck Greene from Dead Rising 2 and Donut from Red VS Blue... lol

But yeah, comments, likes or dislikes, anything. Feel free to post whatever.
