A ringmaster with a grimoire of dark secrets...
... An acrobat with strength that surpasses all men...
... An automaton that moves and talks like a man...
... and demon summoned from the very depths of hell itself.
Welcome to the Carnival de Voire, where mysteries and shadows reside.
Synopsis

In Victorian England, deep within the dark and swampy woods just outside Maplemoor, lies a circus known as the Carnival de Voire. Showing only during the fall season, its many attractions have delighted and frightened the people of Maplemoor for years.
But all this begins to change when a boy with stitches across his face is found unconscious in the forest. Taking pity on him, the Carnival's ringmaster takes the child in and introduces him to the wonderful world of the circus. But devilish deeds have taken place on the fair grounds and the arcane powers of ancient magicks have affected the performers. Who is the mastermind behind these schemes and can the boy with stitches stop it before all of England goes to hell?

Characters
(( Art is by the ever-fantastic Vegeluxia! ))

Image
Name: Unknown
Nickname: Stitches
Age: 14
Gender: Male
Job: Stagehand
Personality: Stitches is often quiet and shy, especially when he first meets the wacky and weird performers of the Carnival. Despite this, he has an inherently curious nature and feels a crippling desire to learn and explore whenever there's something he can't figure out.

Image
Name: Scarlet Quicksilver
Nickname: Mistress
Age: Unknown
Gender: Female
Job: Ringmaster
Personality: Scarlet is haughty and uptight, and likes to get to the point as quickly as possible. Because of her higher-class speech and undeterred authority, most people often mistake her for a man. She's very devious and cunning, doing whatever she can to get what she wants.

Image
Name: Bernadette Stalazzi
Nickname: Bern
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Job: Acrobat/Strongman
Personality: Bern is over-energetic, cheerful, and has a tendency to give nicknames to everyone she knows. Being Scarlet's niece, she's one of the ringmaster's most trusted advisors and performance planners. Though it's a bit hard to understand her at times with her thick Irish accent, Bern quickly becomes like an older sister to Stitches.

Image
Name: Lucifer Cogswallow
Nickname: Loony
Age: Unknown
Gender: Male
Job: Freak
Personality: Despite being part-automaton, Lucifer is actually sensitive to emotions. Though he's a bit quirky, especially when he has a few screws loose(literally), Lucifer acts as the fatherly type to the group and has great skill at cooking. In the Carnival, he's mostly employed to take off his head and quote a little Shakespeare.

Image
Name: Fabian
Nickname: Demon
Age: Unknown
Gender: Male
Job: Freak
Personality: Fabian is a darkling, a type of demon that likes to prey in the overworlds. He has an extreme hate for all people and is locked and bolted in a cage when he's not performing. Despite his demonic powers, he's unable to disobey any command from Scarlet, for some reason. But as soon Stitches joins the caravan, Fabian becomes more eccentric than usual.

Author's Notes

Stitched is planned to be a kinetic novel based off of an actual manuscript I'm writing and planning to publish. Story, script, backgrounds, and programming will all be done by me and sprites/CGs are planning to be commissioned. Because its a kinetic novel and doesn't have any choices, I'm probably going to add a lot of bonus content as well as a secret password that you earn when you finish the story, which will unlock a whole forum on Stitched and the rest of the Darkling Quartet!
Yes, you read that right. The Darkling Quartet. There are going to be four books/kinetic novels in the series, but you'll find out more information about these sequels in the forum.
Despite all my plans, this is my first kinetic/visual novel of any kind and I am a total newb. So, when I finally get a demo up, I'll be gunning for really harsh critiques.
Finally, the novel version of Stitched will be available for free on deviantART for you to read and critique. Thank you for your time!

Progress
(( Character sprites are finished! Now you have pretty pictures to look at along with the descriptions! ))
Story: 30%
Script: 7%
Sprites: 100%
Programming: 40%
CGs: Negotiating

Questions For You
  • What do you think of the synopsis?
  • Have any specific characters caught your attention?
  • Is there anything you find a little off or in need of fixing?
  • On that note, have I made any super-obvious grammar/spelling mistakes that make me looks like an idiot?
  • Would you be willing to stick with me on this project and help me through it?
Thank you for your time! And remember...
The Carnival is waiting...

Time for Concept Sketches! Yay!
(( Yeah... Sorry if these suck. There's a reason I'm commissioning an artist. Also, I attached them because they were to big for the size limit. Sorry for the inconvenience! ))

What do you think of the synopsis?
The synopsis is fine, it tells you enough about the plot without spoiling it, and made me kinda curious about it. It also looks pretty original, with some visual novel themes that I haven't really played before, so I'm curious (Steampunk is a genre I don't often play)

Have any specific characters caught your attention?
Lucifer XD, I'm sorry if it's a shallow reason, it's just the name catches my attention, and I'm not even religious XD, by the way, it's not in a bad way, it's in a good way. But really, he seems like the type of character I would find interesting (I seriously read about them all so don't worry XD). The other characters seem to have some nice personalities too, but Lucifer.....you know? XD

Is there anything you find a little off or in need of fixing?
Not really, I guess circus with no clowns? But that's not really off for me, and in terms of fixing, I don't think so, but if you're talking about the art, I'd need to check again.

On that note, have I made any super-obvious grammar/spelling mistakes that make me looks like an idiot?
Lol, you made one right now, but I don't know if you did it on purpose or not XD. For the rest, no, I actually didn't see any mistake, but I guess I read pretty fast so I might just be clueless or something. So yeah, you didn't.

Would you be willing to stick with me on this project and help me through it?
Hmmm.....I unfortunatly can't help you directly, but I guess, I can help out giving some ideas and criticizing art and moral support...? Yeah I could help you like that, and stick you ya, I always stalk I mean check everything I posted so yeah, I'd be pretty active with that.

Now that I have answered all questions, I'll say, that I'm looking forward to this, and FOUR of these? I'll have a blast XD! So good luck! ^-^

I highly suggest outlining the text in your logo in a light color (white maybe?) it is currently pretty hard to read.

Good luck with everything!

I don't mean to be rude, but the very first thing that I noticed about your post was YUYUKO!! :D (( Sorry, I play a lot of Touhou games. XD ))

Steampunk, though it has growing popularity, is still an underrated genre, so I'm hoping to spread the word a bit with this game. The genre itself is like science fiction and historical fiction giving birth, with fantasy thrown in as well, so if you're a fan of those, you'll love 'punk~

Haha! I like Lucifer a lot too, mostly because the scene where he's introduced came fully formed into my brain. Though I literally only found out what Lucifer meant a few months ago, he's named that because it's so close to 'Loony' which is what Bern likes to call him.

Art is just doodles so far, so you don't need to worry about that. I guess you're right about the clowns, but Bern is pretty much a clown all herself (Mostly because of how much she makes fun of people when they lose at arm wrestling to her...).

Yeah, that was on purpose. XD I wondered if anybody would catch that...

Really, that's all I need. I'm translating the Stitched novel in KN form, so whenever I need help story-wise, I'll link to that. Moral support is all I need!

Yup! The title and synopsis will be revealed on the secret forum and I'll post it here when I finish Stitched and get my outline all planned out. Thank you kindly for your time!

NO, at least, not until I'm already done with it. I personally have a vendetta against all bad voice acting and I don't want my novel to fall into the same ditch. Maybe sometime in the far, far away future...

Hmm...It seems pretty cool, I guess I never really payed attention to it cause science fiction's not my thing T_T, but that doesn't mean I don't really play it, and I AM looking forward to this.

Lol, I don't really blame you for not knowing, I'm not so knowlegeable (Damnit that right there, is probably a typo XD) in religion either, but it did make me instantly like him the best /shot XD. But I really DID read about his personality, I also like that (I SERIOUSLY DID XD).

Well, you did mention you were comissioning an artist (I'm an artist but....not as a profession, sorry), so I kinda get it, if that doesn't work out though, there is one thing that you must know : Practice makes perfect, that's the key, for pretty much anything XD, but in art, it's pretty important. Those weren't all bad (You mentioned that you played touhou games? Then you did a good job XD), though what's up with those dots around Stiches' eyes? They're kinda distracting and one eye was bigger than the other, but the rest was fine (you could make him look more guy-ish, but it's a kid so I'm not gonna press on the issue). And if she covers 2 positions, damn CIRCUS PRO XD. I don't really mind not having clowns, though.

Oh, good! Perfect Cherry Blossom is my favorite of the original games! :D

I'm not much of a science fiction person either... But then I saw all the clocks and gears and cogs of Steampunk and fell in love. XD

Nope, not a typo! And I believe you when you said you read it~

Yes, I've just finished negotiating prices with the artist. The dots were there for a VERY important reason. In the beginning of the game, all you see is black and Stitches says he can't open his eyes. Later, you find out that his eyes were sewn shut. ... Yeah, I'm pretty morbid. XD Anyhoo, those dots represent the place where the needles entered the skin. The one eye being bigger than the other is my attempt at a 3/4 view. I always have problems with those... The reason why I'm not drawing them myself is because... I don't know, I just get really ticked off whenever I look at my artwork. :x

I don't think I'm that good at writing... But luckily, my family is very creativity-oriented so the chapters basically circle around different family members to critique. XD Writing isn't something you need a talent for; you can just write. That's why it's one of my favorite mediums. And if you ever have problems with a story or coming up with plots, just let me know. If there's anything I'm known for, it's generating ideas.

Basically, it's a forum like this but you can only join if you enter in a password, which will be revealed when you finish the game. Therefore, it's 'secret'. And I've just found some AMAZING songs for the characters and I might post them here..... maybe.

That sounds really nice, to have your family help you. I mostly say I'm not good at it because I'm not the most descriptive person, and that's kinda necessary sometimes, but I think I'm creative (I hope so? XD). Like how I'm planning on doing a visual novel but I'm having some issues with the sprite art and ending the story and all, so I'm not putting it on the ideas part of this, because I'm not sure if I'll actually work on it. I actually never really shared my ideas, so I never had other opinions, so thanks, that would be nice.

Oh *feels really dumb* XD. Well, I'm kind of wondering how the songs will be, because I don't really know songs that can represent those themes nicely, so it'll be pretty cool.

Lol see? I'll have 100 posts here before you know it, when I said stalking I mean checking, I meant it XD. I guess I WILL just be the moral support for this since I'm making any games yet. Well, good luck! ^-^

Man, I never got around to that one. I suck at bullet-hell games, so playing through them was a lot of pain for me... But then I discovered the Touhoumon games and it was all good. XD

I used to watch my sisters play video games all the time and that's one of the things that got me into writing. Probably the one that changed my life was Kingdom Hearts~

Yeah, she's actually an artist I've been a fan of for quite some time, so I was really excited when I found out she was doing commissions. :D

I'm actually terrible at descriptions (That's why I got into making visual novels) but all you really need to do use whatever adjectives come to mind, even the forbidden ones (big, nice, happy, etc.) and then use a lovely little thing called a thesaurus. As for the problems, I have those kinds of things all the time. You have no idea how many unfinished projects are sitting in my renpy dock, gathering hypothetical dust. The best thing to do when you are thinking about a project is the organize your ideas using an outline or a list of plot points. Write out a sequence of events on a piece of paper, then mark the events that should be plot twists and what order they should go in. But that's just for pre-writing.

I was thinking of something bouncy for Bern and including accordions, to keep with the circus theme. Then something mysterious for Scarlet, perhaps a violin solo. Lucifer... I have no idea, but Stitches would have a calm little music box or piano while Fabian a really creepy and distorted music box.

Haha! I don't mind the 100 posts; it actually helps me think and gives me something to look forward to~

A novel about a circus is an interesting idea, although I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed at just how "human" everyone looks, given the descriptions. I think you should make everyone look closer to what they actually are. That doesn't mean they can't look humanoid, but right now they don't have any defining features that will instantly scream "this guy is a robot!" or "This guy is a demon!" For example, the guy could have a body that's entirely metal, with even his clothes made out of metal... or the demon could have big wings, horns, that kind of stuff.

*puts on a top hat and monocle* Excuse me sir, the term is 'automaton', not 'robot'. *takes off top hat and monocle* Um, anyway, I do agree I should make Fabian a bit more demon-like, but the whole point of automatons in the Victorian age was that they're supposed to look human. The only reason Lucifer is showing any metal at all is because the cloth that's made to look like skin that covers him wore away after time. Besides, Scarlet doesn't actually try to market him as a 'robot'; she tries to draw people in by saying 'Hey look, this guy can take his limbs off. Come watch!'.
Anyway, thank you very much for the critique!

Lol I also sucked at bullet-hell games, but one day I finished imperishable night. I have been playing on normal and hard ever since XD, and touhoumon can be pretty hard, just saying.

Yeah I liked Kingdom Hearts, and I guess I used to watch my brother and then decided to play myself, even if I didn't know english, and in the end, I got to learn english and if I didn't, I bet my life would dramatically change.

Wow, I never really been a fan of any particular artist, I really just looked at it and would say it's good XD. But I guess good for you, because that really made me curious of how the art will be ^-^.
BlackFurushima wrote: I'm actually terrible at descriptions (That's why I got into making visual novels) but all you really need to do use whatever adjectives come to mind, even the forbidden ones (big, nice, happy, etc.) and then use a lovely little thing called a thesaurus.
Yeah a visual novel's cool because you don't need to describe the visuals that are already there as much :D, but there's such a thing as forbidden adjectives? Those sounded like adjectives I use to decribe things (Oh no....XD), and sorry for my ignorance or english not being my language, what's a thesaurus? *Feels EVEN more dumb* V.V, yeah I'm not so knowlegeable on that kind of stuff <.<. *Ahem* Well, I haven't even started doing in renpy yet, because I'm trying to get around seeing if I can do sprite art and CGs and all, I'm practicing a lot (And art's my strongest point T_T), lol as I said, for everything practice makes perfect, well maybe not for everything but most things XD. And doing plot outlines seems like a good idea, but that's pre-writing? I mostly like to write while I script but maybe I really shouldn't (Lol that makes way too many typos XD).

I have no idea, but Stitches would have a calm little music box or piano while Fabian a really creepy and distorted music box.
Yeah that sounds really good, especially for Scarlet, I really think that would suit her (And lol you don't know for Lucifer made me laugh XD), and also for Stiches, it sounds really fiting.

Great! ^-^ I also really like to comment and help so that's great, and I guess even touhou makes you think? (Just kidding XD).
