Project 1: Futility

#1 Post by otaku_kun » Fri Feb 22, 2013 3:55 pm

So hello everyone. I'm just here to make a quick intro about me and then I'll get started on an idea I wrote for what could be my first project. :D

I am 'otaku_kun' and I found Ren'Py after playing Katawa Shoujo. I prefer programming the whole game because it's what I like to do however I am still quite unfamiliar with ren'py and it's scripting system, hopefully it shouldn't take too long to understand. I like drawing though I'm better with pencil and paper than digital art with a graphic tablet; I don't mind producing some concept art but it won't be that good compared to the others I've seen before on this forum. So introductory done, let's get on with the real thing. :D

The title of my first project is going to be called 'Futility'. No title change, this is final.
Here are all the details I have so far come up with in a couple of hours. It's not complete, but it's not far from the final thing. The project is going to be a kinetic novel (a short one) and the genre of this novel are:
1. Post-Apocalyptic (more like war and disaster)
2. Slice of Life
3. Tragedy (Be prepared, it won't end like some of you might think... Hopefully)

I made a document about it so I'll copy and paste everything from there. Remember, it's not final, I just went on the Ren'Py site and followed the tutorial and saw this plan like development. Though I extended it a bit further:

My First Game
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Project 1

Title: Futility
Development Time: 3-4 weeks (minus delay i.e. school work, revisions/studies etc)
Playing Time: 30+ minutes
Story Length: --
Cast: 2 main protagonists, 1 main antagonist, a few other minor characters
Story World and other related content: 4 background scenes plus images relating to the scene
Music: --

Characters

Image
1. Alexander Graham
- Role: Protagonist
- Sprites: 4 sprites (neutral stance, defence stance, angered stance, shocked stance)
Story: Alexander's dad is the leader of a group known as 'The Fraternity of Hope'. His physique is
strong and well toned. Smart enough to know his way around and doesn't fall for things very easily. Alexander keeps to himself when meeting new people because of his cautious manner but once he knows someone he never forgets their face.

Image
2. Napoleon Reagan
- Role: Protagonist
- Sprites: 5 sprites (neutral, defence stance, angered stance, shocked stance, devious stance)
Story: Napoleon's dad is the leader of a rebellious group known as 'The Unblinding Truth'. His physique is similar to Alexander's and his intelligence is on par with him, just slightly more because Napoleon does show a devious side. His character is outgoing and prefers an adventurous, dangerous lifestyle, unlike Alexander. However he does have a soft, compassionate side to him once he opens up from his preserved nature.

3. William Graham
- Role: Antagonist
- Expressions: 3 facial expressions (neutral, happy, angry)
- Sprites: 3 sprites (neutral stance, angered stance, defence stance)
Story: Alexander's father and leader of 'The Fraternity of Hope'. The aftermath of war changed his personality dearly, becoming at all times stern and intimidating but that's only because he doesn't want to show his weakness; it's obvious why William was chosen to lead. He does everything he can to protect his son after witnessing the death of his wife and will stop at nothing to rid the world of evil and chaos from the opposing group.

Story World (Background)

1. Deserted City.
2. On the Road.
3. A small hideout.
4. T.F.O.H settlement.

Other images relating to the scene:

1. Deserted City:
- An image of Napoleon in chains.
2. On the Road:
- An image of two boys walking together across a deserted road, leading to the hideout. The image should be slightly dark in colour because the sun is setting.
3. A small hideout:
- An image of a treehouse with two boys looking up, amazed.
4. T.F.O.H settlement:
- An image of one of many settlements in America. The image is a birds-eye view of what the camp looks like.

Story

"Violence is in our blood, for we cannot escape it but only embrace it. Violence is the answer to everything in this world. It is futile to go against it because it's the law. It's the absolute!"
The year was 2012, a year after the Great Civil War of America broke out. It lasted for too long, 7 years in fact. But America was still restless. Why? Because of two conflicting groups, one of hope and one of truth. It was up for the people of America to decide who they will fight against and when the time comes when warriors perish, they would come to realise that what they were fighting for was pointless. The answer was simple. It's the next generation, and the next and the next to decide the fate of America. People cannot wait for miracles now, they needed to act now. Fortunately, the turn of events happened on an autumn morning, in the middle of a deserted city...

Yeah, I might modify the storyline a bit. Got kind of stuck on what to do with it. I think some people call it a 'writer's block' or something like that.
Pretty much the idea came from sitting down doing nothing on a boring day. I got some things sorted like sprites needed and background scenes.
Since this is posted on the 'Ideas' section, I might make a demo showing some features because I'm not exactly sure if this project will be good enough to complete.
In addition, I might post some images I drew if you guys want to get a feel of it, bearing in mind that it won't be good LOL.

Anyway, that's the end of this post! :D
If you like it then please comment, it'll motivate me to start the real thing and if there's something wrong, please do tell me and I'll try to fill it out. But please, don't be too harsh, this is my first time! :D

See ya until next time!

I read your notes, and have a few questions...

1. You stated that Futility will be a kinetic novel, and there will be two protagonists. I'm not entirely sure what that will mean. Will the audience get to see the two guys' perspectives? Will the viewpoint change at regular intervals, or when it's dramatically appropriate?

2. Your characters' names have a lot of implications. One of your protagonist's names is almost identical to Alexander Graham Bell's name. His father's name is William Graham. The name William can be shortened with the nickname Billy... And I think there might be a bit of symbolism with the name Napoleon Reagan. Just maybe. :D

I have no problem with symbolism and meaningful names. But I think you might benefit by reconsidering your characters' names. Maybe it's just me, but the characters sound like they might have wandered off the set of a parody or a ridiculous comedy. I think a little more subtlety could go a long way.

3. Do you plan to state what's happening outside the ruined USA? If it might be beyond the scope of your plans, then don't worry about it.

4. Finally, if you have trouble using Ren'py, be sure to ask for help.

Your first question stated that it's going to be a kinetic novel. And sorry, my bad. The main character is Alexander Graham but Napoleon is also quite significant. Maybe a deuteragonist would be the correct term used, maybe? Hmm... LOL :D

Your second question stated that my characters' name have a lot of implications. To be honest, I just randomly created these names, talk about coincidence haha. Yeah, I might take on that advice and change the name so it doesn't cause that much trouble in the long run :D
Napoleon Reagan, hmm... Like I said I just randomly created this name but the reason why I chose Napoleon specifically, I have no clue. It sounds quite silly but Napoleon just sorts of stand out to me. Maybe I could ask another writer for help with this project because it's obviously still in it's early stages. (This is going to be a lot of work!!! :O) LOL

Your third question, I'm not sure really. I might do a short intro to tell about the history because it might make it sound interesting. I'm trying to create another world with this short novel but if other people enjoy it I might make a longer version maybe that explains the details. But that's all later on and I have no idea where I'm going with this. :D

Lastly, yeah I could do with some help. Especially some help with programming, more specifically designing the interface. I can customise the main menu easily with image maps but that's just about it. I tried to do the preferences and save/load screen but I failed miserably. Once I get a better idea of where this is going I might go and ask for help with the other people on this forum. Hopefully this story might gain some views because that will tell me that they're interested.

Thanks for the comments and yes I will some of your advice on board with me. If there's anything else please write it down in the comment section. It will definitely help me design this game. Thanks :D
