Hello, my name is Valerie and I decided to create my first simple otome game! These aren't my drawn characters or background pictures but provided by a lovely site called BASSNOVEL. So it's mainly the story I should be given credit to. This game may have a demo but a full game is still undecided. I'm new to creating and everything. Any feed back or suggestions are welcome! I shall be using visual novelty but will change it if the graphics aren't able to be used...

~(You) Main character~
A tomboyish, unladylike kind of girl. Mistaken for a boy a lot. She's a tough sort, mastering the roundhouse kick like a true pro.


~Yuu~
The lead singer of Lucifer. A bit of a playboy, the laid back kind of guy. He could care less about fame, more of the passionate side of simply delivering his lyrics. He may be a good person but his habits imply otherwise.


~Akihiko~
The guitarist in Lucifer. A rich boy out for fame. He's childish most of the times, demanding, and doesn't know how to do anything by himself.


~Sora~
The manager of Lucifer. The quiet and lazy type of guy. A black mailing, no good man out for the wealth and success of Lucifer for his own selfish reasons. He has a good heart but his intentions aren't very pure.

You don't have to compose your own music but if you are looking for pre-made music you'll have to make sure the creator has given permission for people to use it. You can find free to use music here:

This a quote from one of the mods on this site:

BASS resources may be used with the Bassnovel software. They are not licensed to be used in any other context.

So if you are using Novelty you aren't allowed to use the Bassnovel art. There are other creative common art pieces you can use with Novelty though. You can look for free to use sprites (that are allowed for Novelty here):

First of all, welcome!

Unfortunately, like Googaboga said, all the assets you can get at BASS Novel are only free to use within BASS Novel itself, as the website has some sort of built in VN creation stuff. I'm not totally sure how it works. But if you use any other program like Ren'Py or Novelty to make a game with BASS Novel stuff, you need to get permission from the specific creator of the art before you can use it. I haven't signed up for BASS Novel so I'm not really sure if there is any easy way to get in contact with the people who've uploaded images there, maybe the site has a way to PM them or something, though since I believe it's based on a Chinese site there might a language barrier in many cases.

But, if you're having trouble getting sprites and backgrounds from BAST Novel, there are other sources you can use. I too suggest checking out the all the places Googaboga linked. In addition, I've been using a great tool called IIcharacter that has a whole bunch of different sprite sets and modification options. Just make sure you check out the specific terms of use of any free content before you use it, regardless of what place you get it from. Most of the time things are fairly simple and straightforward, like "please don't use in pornographic games" or "noncommercial use only", etc, but sometimes there are things a bit more complicated.

For example, one thing that's not immediately obvious is that content that has been released under a CC-BY-SA (Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike) license cannot be used with content that has been released under a license forbidding commercial use, even if you don't intend to sell the game yourself. If you have questions about specific licenses or terms, feel free to ask, and hopefully people more knowledgeable than myself will be able to provide guidance.

As for music, I'll say that I personally love Nosoapradio.us, but check out the other places Googaboga mentioned as well.

I wish I could provide technical advice, but I am only familiar with Ren'Py. And by "familiar" I mean I'm still largely a newbie myself, but have at least mastered some of the basics. But I wish you luck at least.

Yeah no problem. Your question was nicely answered but I do want to say that you can still make your game without the Bass Novel art so don't get discouraged . There are many nice assets out there that can be used with Novelty. And who knows once your game is done or almost done you may be able to recruit someone to make custom art for you. Even if you release the game you could still make an updated version someday if you find someone willing to do art for you.

wow...thanks alot! I'll be sure to contact the artist and if it doesn't work out then i'll try to create new characters with the attempt of my own creation.

I don't think the title is dark. If it wasn't for it's name I wouldn't have checked this thread. When I saw the title I immediately thought of the song Lucifer by SHINee.

Just so you're aware, there's a manga called Sensual Phrase that is about a band named Lucifer(the name is stylized as Λucifer since Λ is the Greek letter L or something like that, but still) and a band called Lucifer was created in real life to promote the manga. I haven't read the manga myself, and I don't know if that would be enough to mean you can't have a band named Lucifer in your game, but I just thought you should know.

Not exactly a song people should be listening to. It's dark and it's, in reality, about a demon. Dream Girl and Sherlock are better
