Butterfly

I've just started my adventure with Ren'Py so it is my first Visual Novel. It was originally designed to be a "point-and-click" adventure game but because of some hardware problems, the project was postponed and has been aging on my hard drive for months - until now.

Butterfly is a cyberpunk story, which takes place at the end of the XXI century. It's not a fairy-tale, it's more like s-f thriller. Because of the nature of its content (dialogues, graphics), it is appropriate only for mature players. I think it will be quite different from most of the games here on the forum, but I hope you'll like it. I can't really say anything about the plot, because the first episode is like a "detective story" :) All I can say is that the main character is male and he's also the narrator.

Now, into some details. The game/novel will have:

- interesting (I think so) plot with many characters,
- five episodes (the first one has over 1300 lines of in-game text)
- 3D rendered backgrounds, characters and animated cut-scenes,
- original music, composed by a professional composer especially for this game,

I'm Polish and "Butterfly" was originally written in Polish as well. I translated it into English as well as I could to make it "international" :) I'm aware that my English writing will never be as impressive (and correct) as the one of a native speaker. I just hope I didn't make things to vague. :)

The whole game is already designed (script, descriptions, some concept art, maps, story boards). Script of the first episode is already playable (without sound and 90% of graphics, though). Music is almost prepared, I will add when the game is finished.

If everything goes according to the "plan", episode 1 should be ready in a few weeks. Like I mentioned, I have just started with Ren'Py and I still need to learn how to use it, every day I discover something new :). But I'm sure the final product will have what it takes.

A few screenshots from Episode 1

Cheers!

Well, it's my style :) I usually visualize my projects as movies so I draw a lot and than try to put it into action.

Glad you guys like it.

Nice. A well-realized debut.

One issue is with:
Image
depending on where you place the text box, an awful lot of here will be covered up. Have you tried covering up the bottom 160 or so pixels* of each pic to see what they look like with the text box on the screen?

* Assuming 800x600.

A few images are like this one but they are from the intro and the text will be displayed without background. I would like to put it in the upper part of the screen, though. Is there a simple command for this? I know "centered", which prints the text in the centre of the screen. But can I display it a little higher? (I know little about programming )

This looks like it should be really interesting, and add some variety around here as well, yay. The art is rather impressive, too. I'm definitely looking forward to this.

I though I will summarize Episode 1 progress so far:

Character sprites: 5/8 (there are 16 persons/machines in the first episode but half of them will not be visible - voice only - or will be visible in the background)

Backgrounds: 46/125 (total number may slightly increase)

Special effects and animations: so far a few transitions, there will be much more when all graphics is ready

Music: 9/9

Sound effects: 25/~40

Scripting: 100%

Translating (from Polish to English): 100% (needs to be checked for mistakes though)

Programming: ~ 50% (it is playable but I keep improving it and changing all the time :) )

Wow...this is some impressive stuff. What I love about this is that your artwork has a very original "feel" to it. I just can't seem to find anything to compare it to and that intrigues me. I'll definitely be watching this project.
