Background Artist Needed for YKK OAV, and other topics

#1 Post by EwanG » Fri Mar 21, 2008 3:59 pm

Some of you may remember me from the Senior Year VN. Others might have run into the work I put into Camp Handiba. Most of you probably don't know either... and that's ok :D

I'm running a fan-based project to put together 4 episodes as OAVs for Yokohama Kaidashi Kiko (also known as Quiet Country Cafe or Cafe Alpha or even YKK). We are animating three chapters per episode, and all chapters are ones that haven't been animated before.

Have script (just needed some tweaking by yours truly), an animator, couple of voice actors, etc. The one thing we're missing is a background artist. I have been trying slowly but surely to take the backgrounds from the manga, clean them up, scale them, and color them. It takes forever - for someone with my minimal skills. Ideally would like someone who I can point to the chapter, and they can do their own version of the background. By this I mean they don't have to copy or be completely influenced by the original author. But if it shows a wall with steps coming down to the beach in one frame, and the same setup but looking from the top down in another, I'd like to still be able to setup a similar scene.

If you're interested, a PM here or an email to ewan.grantham@gmail.com would be greatly appreciated. There's no money in this effort (sorry, none of us are getting paid), but there is credits in the program.

That said, and moving on to the "other topics", I'm working with a producer about possibly pitching Camp Handiba to some of his contacts as a 13 episode animated feature. So the script (and y'alls feedback) is not going to waste. Right now it's more a matter of trying to pull my materials together into a decent proposal, and he's still interested after the first round of this - partly because I gather he has a funding agency/broadcast group already lined up. Obviously someone who helps with the YKK effort will be considered for the Camp Handiba effort (producer is wanting me to handle the animation, and I'm hoping I can pull together a crew to do so).

Thanks in advance to everyone on here,
Ewan

You could say I've finally joined the "DARKSIDE" by once again working with my father or alternately... "My Mother FINALLY GROUNDED ME"... :)

My Ren'py projects are still ongoing but on a slower pace due to me being assimilated back into my family, forcing me to get married and to cut my waist lenght hair (OVER MY DEAD BODY!) Not to mention the countless hours spent trolling on *chan... and the list goes on)
Spoiler: I am currently working on a stand-alone kinetic VN featuring Lucy, her humble beginnings, together with Eileen and the fatefull day where she gets fired

This YKK thing looks intriguing o_o... So, you're actually making 4 episodes from the ground up? o_O... and a series for Hadiba? Man, you sure go 100% when you do something ^_^. Good luck!

That's the idea. I'm hopeful that once we get a couple episodes out (am currently trying to work to a once every three months release - we'll see how that goes) that it will provide inspiration to other groups to do their own Manga adaptations rather than wait to see if the studios will ever get around to it. Besides there's at least two other series I'd like to work on after this one (again, dreaming big) where I know it's unlikely they would ever get a series or OAV otherwise. But first steps first.

Well, you have to remember my hope was to do the Japanese thing and have a successful game that someone would want to adapt into an anime. This just skips the waiting for an adaptation step. I'm also fortunate that the story line feeds into a demand a number of folks have for material about the handicapped and native american culture. So having some of both... 8)

So, doing any background work yourself these days?

Oh, and in case y'all want to see what the OAV will end up with if someone doesn't step forward:

Background 1

Background 2

Background 3

So, do the world a favor and help save it from this.

Aah, nope, I pretty much suck at backgrounds, sadly ^^;

What surprises me the most is that there would be producers looking for such things. Is it usually an external studio offering to make an OAV or the rights holders looking for a studio to make one?
