You Don't Need to be Alone - LD48 - Playable

#1 Post by SusanTheCat »

This was my "team's" entry in Ludum Dare 22. This was created in 72 hours by my son and his friends with me doing the programming.

Dude is returning from an extended stay in the hospital due to an accident. He has to get re-acquainted with his class mates. And then there is another accident. [Duh duh duh dum!]

This is a dating sim with a shooter mini-game. It was written in python using Ren'py, PyGame, and PGU.

The mini game

Code: Select all

Statistics:

The game contains 262 screens of dialogue.
These screens contain a total of 1,816 words,
for an average of 6.9 words per screen.
The game contains 20 menus.
There are four endings. One good, the others... not so good. Currently no one is "obtainable" except of a scene in the good ending. We do have plans for that.

Please note:
EVERYTHING in this game was created in 72 hours. All programming, writing, music, and artwork. (And the AWESOME sound effects for the mini game!)

So my question to you is:
Is this game worth developing further or should I leave it as is?

Yep, this is a group of self conscious teenagers and a mother who thinks everything they do is wonderful. I need an objective opinion. Don't worry about hurting my feelings. :) I'll still love this game no matter what.

Susan

OMG - I just realized that one of the "hidden" stats is showing. A free kitten to whoever can figure out what it is a stat for. (It's the number in the top left corner)

I'm not fond of the one choice every two lines (more of an Interactive Fiction thing than a Visual Novel, I know), anyways

Since it has the whole midi like music and retro feel going on, you can actually "polish" the work further by actually unpolishing it. Namely, go all-out with the retro feel. I don't know how your son will feel about it, but I suggest pixellating all the graphics and text, and customizing the UI to really feel like an 8-bit game.

The retro look would be sweet. Thanks for the feed back.

I agree that there is not enough "filler" between the choices. We need to give more clues as to what's going on. My team was better at talking about it rather than doing it. I think it need about 10 times more words than we have just for the current scenes.

Did you like the sound effects for the mini-game? I kept asking my sound guys for the sound effects, but they kept forgetting. So eventually I just recorded them myself.

Who is working on this project?
SusanTheCat: Programmer
Other games: The House that Bled Paint, Camp Renpy, CRS Escape, All are Invited

The Team:
My Son: Music, writing
My Alternate Son: Writing
Son's Girl Friend: Art
Son's Friend: Music

When did you start working on this project?
This was a Ludum Dare project and was finished in 72 hours. :) So it was started last Friday and is in a playable state now.

Please describe the first few acts of the game, once the characters have finished meeting. Do you know what the ending will be?
Dude comes back to school after being away for months due to an accident. The school is a boarding school for military families. He gets re-acquainted with the kids in the school and spends a couple of normal days until he heads to the range. There, a freak accident causes him to be hit in the head with an air pellet.

He is now plagued by weird dreams where he is killing zombies and ghosts.

He attends school again. People are disappearing from class.

Eventually either investigators come and Dude has to fight for his life or headaches drive Dude to see a doctor.
A lot still needs to be fleshed out and minor plot lines added. There is more to the idea than I have written here. There are reasons why these things are happening.

How big is the game?

It is written to take place in around 20 game days and a game day takes less than 5 minutes to play.

There are three main "obtainables" and two extras. (My team kept adding people :( )

What has been finished so far?

The mini-game is all done. A couple more levels could be added and the tile art could be neatened up.

The structure of the story is set up along with the major plot elements. EVERY scene needs to be fleshed out.

The "obtainables" need to have their plot lines added.

Music is good.

Sound effects need to be added. Except I am starting to like my "pew pew" noises.

What tools are you using?

PGU http://code.google.com/p/pgu/

Whoa! Triple post.

I did a test to see if I could produce 8-bit art:

I think it is workable if I touch up drawings beforehand.
