Kyuuketsuki BonBon (Sprites are here!)

#1 Post by A Terrible Rabbit » Sun Dec 13, 2009 7:21 pm

***new art style now >w<***

Hello :3 I've never coded anything before, but I saw something someone made with Ren'py, and I knew I had to try it out! So, I'm making a visual novel about a comic Idea I had that I never really went into. . . basically it means I have characters and a story that's extreeemley flexible. I've already created the very beginning, but I have some questions I'd like to ask. . . basically, what do you like in a VN?

The bare bones of it is it follows the story of Gaspard Gusteaux, a (short) Vampire Hunter, and his partner Vincent. Vincent is a vampire. He's not a very scary vampire. I make everything cute. There are some BL undertones, but I'm not sure if I should get into it or not, haha. I might cut out half my audience that way. Anyhoo, Vincent has gone out in the sun, and the game follows your efforts to get him well again so you can go back to work.

So. . . I wanted to ask, now that I've coded my intro, what do you think makes a fun VN? I'm better at drawing than anything else, so it already has a lot a lot of pictures. But I wanted to ask some more experienced people. . ..
Do branching storylines annoy you trying to hunt down endings?
What makes a good kinetic novel?
What do you think about fanservice?

Sorry if this seems too much like daydreaming- I really do have a quarter of this thing done, and intend to finish it over winter break.

Here's a crappy doodle of my main character, Gaspard. The real art will be much tighter. (please ignore the right arm )

Also, no my vampires do not sparkle.

The correct question is: what do you like in a VN? :)

Your shading is kind of clumpy... what program are you using? There are different ways to get really good coloring. A free one is Pixia.

Here's some tutorials: http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewto ... =26&t=6147

That's photoshop. clumpy photoshop, hehe.
The truth is, i'm a traditional artist, and while doing this I'm having to learn how to do digital again. It's too hard for me to work by myself traditionally and keep all the sizes and colors consistent. :) Thanks for the feedback.

What JinzouTamashii said. What's important is what you like. There's no way to please everybody, so if you're happy, you've already won. Make us like what you like! :D

I like your artwork, and the story ideas sound very cute so...I'm looking forward to see it :)

Best of luck! :D

Just posting to let you know that I'm also interested in this project. <3 Your art is awesome, I love your style!

And don't worry, BL undertones are never a bad thing... ;)

Oh, and I'm not sure if I should reply to your questions about branching storylines and all that, since I'm not exactly experienced... But if you're still looking for an input, let me know.

:D Basically, I was planning on making a few different endings. I know sometimes it can be a little tedious to hunt down all the different choices, though. I'm just wondering how many endings are too many endings, things people like and don't like about branching storylines... etc.
I guess I have a pretty audience-inspired work ethic.

I agree with Lanna about the BL. If you like it and think it makes the story closer to the one you want to tell, then by all means, add it in. If you want, you can make some of the endings have it and some of the endings be BL-free, so that players can avoid it if they want, but you're not going to alienate everyone who wants to play your game by putting BL in it. There are some people who really don't like it and won't play your game if they can't avoid the BL... but there are also a lot of people who really do like it, and will want to play your game more because of the BL. And some people don't even care as long as there's a good plot.

I like the idea for the story, and your drawing is cute, especially the face. I will definitely play this once it comes out!

Finally! It's winter break- I realized me and the computer are at odds, so I think I'll be doing most of the backgrounds by hand with watercolors. It's so much quicker to throw some paint down than to play around with transparencies- I think I'll save the computer for my characters. Also, thanks a lot Jinzou for the brushes- they saved my digital illustration final, haha.
I think I will go with a branching storyline, after all- it's fun to think of how many ways a situation could go.

The story and the art? Anime and Manga aren't interactive so they didn't let you to influence the outcome.

Good art, good story, good writing, some comedy to brighten the mood, also good music wouldn't hurt. Sorry, couldn't help much here ^_^
A Terrible Rabbit wrote:Do branching storylines annoy you trying to hunt down endings?
Heck no. Look above, interactivity is one the reason I play VN, so actually, branching storylines is a must.
A Terrible Rabbit wrote:What makes a good kinetic novel?
Since kinetic novel would be very linear and you just read and read, I really hope the art would be good... and most importantly the story is good and the writing is easy to read. Some humor here and there wouldn't hurt either.
A Terrible Rabbit wrote:What do you think about fanservice?
Yeah! I love them ^_^ Though if over-used it could be somewhat strange and could be disturbing (though I love over-used fan-service of Love Hina and Mahou Sensei Negima). Used perfectly and it could be a good distraction.

But... since you're making a BL, I don't I'm interested in that kind of fan-service...

Here's a little sketch painting of the characters. . . got kinda lazy at the end. .. ugh those legs. I went back and switched up the style to something much simpler. The colors may change, but the outfits won't- I hope they look cute together.

Also, as a side note, I don't mind if anyone borrows any of my character designs that I post, as long as it's for a free game. (no comics, art pieces or paid stuff) >w< Just show me what you did with them.

Oh, and also, thanks for all the feedback everyone!
