[WIP] The Loop

#1 Post by Greeny » Mon Aug 02, 2010 3:50 am

Okay, so this is my first real visual novel project.
I'm quite proud of myself for having found a storyline simple enough to actually make it past the concept phase and get some work done.

Imagine this. You wake up in your apartment. It's a quarter past 2 am in the middle of the night. You get up, have a drink, maybe do some other stuff. Then you go back to sleep. You have a really crazy dream. Then you wake up in your apartment. It's a quarter past 2 am in the middle of the night. You get up, have a drink, maybe do some other stuff. Then you go back to sleep...

Can you escape the loop? Or will you be forever, unknowingly, trapped in a world that spans only a couple of hours?

It's quite simple, more atmospheric and everyday life than real story. And a scary twist if you manage to escape the loop. There's a terrible evil lurking in the shadows...

I'm now looking for radical artists!
What's needed:
4 background pieces (I don't really ask for details. There will be variations on each piece but they can be done with effects and layers)
Some CG arts (Mostly a depiction of a character with blurry or unclear backgrounds, mind you.)

What would be appreciated though if you're willing:
Some more CG arts (Zooms on items in the backgrounds mentioned earlier. Not really essential.)

Prerequisite:
Being radical

((I am also looking for radical Beta testers!
What's needed:
Playing through the game's imageless version (May be a bit tedious considering its nature.)
Reporting bugs (Duh)
Providing feedback on the gameplay and writing (Pwease? Do it for me.)
Trying to unlock the secret end (I want to know if it doesn't take Sherlock Holmes, you know.)
(Also, the end scene needs testing. Thorough testing. It's a complex system.)

What would be appreciated though if you're willing:
I'm not sure about implementing sound effects, so being not me, the writer, I want you to provide feedback on how the writing atmospherically comes across to you, and whether or not you think I should add sound effects and where.))

Prerequisite:
Being radical

Current progress:
Writing and programming: 100%!
Images: 0%
Sound and music: I dunno lol

Stats:
Playing time: Undefined
Endings: 0
Secret endings: 1

The game contains 810 screens of dialogue.
These screens contain a total of 8103 words,
for an average of 10.0 words per screen.
The game contains 64 menus.

Re: [WIP] The Loop "A game with a high replay value"

I just hope this doesn't lead to us watching Koizumi flirting with Kyon for endless nine episodes. Because that would be pretty painful. ;) [/end Haruhi reference]

This actually isn't as original an idea as you may think. A lot of visual novels and traditional stories have been based on this concept. For example, this is the principle plot element of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and the aforementioned infamous Endless Nine arc of the Haruhi series.

Hm, good point. But there's a lot less plot, I can assure you.

Lol, I hated that endless 9 arc of Haruhi. I had to stop watching the series because of it.

For a first project, I think it's pretty neat. :)

The idea might not be very original, but it's the execution that counts.

That's an original premise for a VN, even if it was done to death in movies/tv shows. However, it still lacks something special that will draw the readers. You can give it an existential spin, or a Silent Hill horror flavor. You can put an emphasis on the repetition and the atmosphere, or create a plot surrounding the mystery of the time loop.

Good luck.

Ah, so it's like the sequels to Tsukihime and Fate Stay/Night, Kagetsu Tohya and Hollow Ataraxia? Both of them have a repeating time loop (one lasts a day, the other four days) wherein you can make choices but ultimately end up, groundhog day style, back at the start, until you unravel the loop.

Be interesting to see how it turns out; good luck!

Progress is being made!
Writing's almost finished, except a couple of things involving me coming up with irrevelant things, and the final scene.
Then I need to find an artist, add the images, and work in some nice effects for them and especially the final scenes.
Here's the current statistics:

The game contains 590 screens of dialogue.
These screens contain a total of 6175 words,
for an average of 10.5 words per screen.
The game contains 39 menus.

Alright! The program is finished!

I updated the first post with a Lint report.
And, this means I'm now looking for artists and beta testers!
You'd wonder why I don't wait for an imaged version for beta testing, but trust me. No, just trust me.
Anyways! Details are in the first post you must read it and APPLY!

I just have to say this: This sounds like a spin-off of Inception to me ;p
Projects:
Alone- (Horror/Sci-Fi) Complete! Link
Demokratiya- (Adventure/Action) I'm kind of winging it with this one. Goal is 100,000 words. Yeah, it's gonna take a while.
{Last worked on Sept/28 : Word count (coding and all) ~4500}

This looks really neat, like the idea. I was thinking of the movie "12:01", an oldie but a goodie. Anyone seen it? Anyways, If you are looking for a beta still, drop me a line. I have about 2 gigs of VN on my computer that I play regularly. I even take a peek at the GxB stuff if it has a good plot. I can spot a problem fairly quickly because I write VN's in my spare time and I have been known to mess thing up on purpose just to see if I can fix it, . Good luck and wish you the best on the VN!

I already have two people beta testing, I wouldn't mind more help, I just don't know how many betas usually go in a project or how many betas is too much betas.

I'm really in need of an artist. But I guess I won't find one if I just sit here waiting for them to come to me huh. It'll get right on it. After I finish these, uh, other things.
