How do you draw anime characters in profile
How do you draw anime characters in profile
I was wondering how to draw characters in side view if you have only seen them in front. An example of this is Wendel from english project created by sapphi by the way(Yes I am still working on it and currently writing the story and drawing the story boards.). The noses and mouth of anime character are completely flat so then how do you draw them in profile view. The main thing I want to learn is how to draw the face in profile view.I have a mannequin by the way. Links to tutorials preferred.

This tutorial might help
Other than that, it takes practice to draw profile views. Some people (like me) keep things simple, while others will go in and detail the lips, nostrils, eyelashes, etc.

How do I draw a character in profile/side view who I have only seen in front view and don't have any references to draw in side view.

That's the hard part. You have to imagine as best as you can on how they look in profile.NewMember wrote:How do I draw a character in profile/side view who I have only seen in front view and don't have any references to draw in side view.
Here's how I imagined the sprite looks like in profile: You have to use whatever information's given to you and go from there. Also, anime noses may appear flat, but they do have depth.

Re: How do you draw anime characters in profile
I suppose you might want to memorize how a generic anime character of a given gender and age group "should" look in an particular style and then adjust it based on the information you have about an each character's front-view features. That might require collecting side-view pictures from various anime/manga and figuring out how every feature is conveyed in that style...though Rio-sama's lovely examples could also serve as a starting point...

well, tutorials are good, books are good but learning the real anatomy will help you for sure.

I use mark criley for anatomy and I don't see how learning human anatomy will help with doing anime faces considering their noses and lips are completely flat. I was wondering fawn how would you draw an anime character such as mine in profile using only the front view picture I posted.

Yeah, how could understanding reality possibly help you draw that which is derived from reality. Complete nonsense. *please read as sarcasm*NewMember wrote:I don't see how learning human anatomy will help with doing anime faces considering their noses and lips are completely flat.
Anime is just a stylised form of reality. And I have never seen any anime where the nose is drawn flat. That would be just weird. You need to learn and understand how the human head works in real life. Then you need to understand the multitude of ways to translate that into a stylised form and pick one. And then you figure out how to apply the information you have onto that form. Basically, you need to understand what you are doing in order to do it. That is how you learn to draw. It doesn't just magically happen. It would be an excellent idea to check out all those resources people have offered and start trying to understand what is going on, that is if you want to improve and be able to do things yourself.

Re: How do you draw anime characters in profile
well, I hadn't meant to study reality, i meant to say to study the human anatomy cause the bone of your drawings is the anatomy itself anime-styled or not. It goes the same with drawing backgrounds... you could never make a decent one without perspective. ---well, it was just something i've read from a book I've bought though.

Here is my attempt at doing Pamela the amputated left hand teacher who wears a uniform by Sapphi. It took about 45 minutes what do you think.

*Pull out pen*
I marked some anatomy mistakes I noticed, but otherwise it was good for a first attempt. Just keep practicing and you'll get better.

Re: How do you draw anime characters in profile
I'll give you some tips to improve drawing's anatomy and poses:
- First of all, draw a simple pose like is that police woman or whatever she is. Remake it until you get something close to reality or what you want, I'm speaking about anatomy... The size of face, legs, arms, etc. Also simetry between body's sides. This will help you later works.
- Analize a realtime image... maybe a simple pose like a person standing sideface (I'm not sure about the right terms) and advices will arrive by itselves.
- Copy some human poses drawing or photo to practice.
- Remember that you always can have reference for your own drawings. Like copying some pose and then add it your own stuff.
I did a image for your reference, if you don't mind. Oh, and another advice: related the errors wich HigurashiKira has pointed out to this drawing and you could see it by yourself
Maybe the face is too big :S

Re: How do you draw anime characters in profile
Hi there~
I draw and I thought I would try to give some tips as well
Excuse the messiness of the sketches XD
Have you tried starting off your heads as a really rough circle? It can seem kind of annoying to do sometimes, but I find it does help alot. That's what I do so I get a nice rounded head and it works for just about any angle!

You can faintly see the rough green circle I drew right~ Even in profile view, the head remains pretty round over all.
You don't have to do the circle super nicely either, since its kind of like a guide line-ish thing if that makes sense XD
Also, the shape of the eye changes a bit in profile view to become more triangular. I start with the bottom part first, since it almost looks in line with the slope of the nose when I draw profiles. Also important to remember that the eye is still round too: if you draw it flat it can look kinda weird...The iris part also is thinner in profile view as well. I tend to draw a curved line for where I want to position the eyes too. And I also tend to start from the nose, which should be right in the middle of the head. Having a short forhead is a little awkward looking XD The line from the nose to the chin is more or less a straight line, though I like to make it curve a bit so the chin and nose stand out a bit more. And if you want to add some details of the lips, I usually aim for in between the nose and chin. Don't make them stick out too much (which is why having a slight curve to the line is nice) or else you get ducky, overbite looking mouths.
I do the same for angled shots too (since I saw the angle one you did as well :3)

(don't mind the eyebrows...It looked weird without them too XD)
The only real difference is the line that goes down the circle. It helps give a rounded dimension to the head
Kind of like making a sphere in geometry only really rudimentary and rough XD The nose doesn't always line up on that line, but is usually near it. The eyes still stay on the other line though, and their shape is...well...eye like? XD The one further away gets all squashed up and small too to give a sense of turning away, but should remain the same height.
Those are some tips I thought of! I hope they kind of help (it is kinda long >>). Every one seems to do them a little differently too, so try things out and see what comfortable
