What Ren'Py games have improved your own work?

#1 Post by Tsundere Lightning »

Which Ren'Py games have you played that inspired and improved the quality of your own work? Primarily as examples of what to do, or what to build on.
She's sun and rain: She's fire and ice. A little crazy, but it's nice.
Bliss Stage: Love is your weapon! A sci-fi visual novel about child soldiers coming of age. Kickstarter prerelease here. WIP thread here. Original tabletop game by Ben Lehman here. Tumblr here.

For me there have been two games so far that inspired me on this site:
RE: Alistair++
and
Lucky Rabbit Reflex!

They have a lot in common with what I'm planning for my own game and were awesome examples of how to do it ^^
You should defiantly check them out!

The Question... and the F-Question.
The former inspire me to start making VN games while the later shows me that you could make neat GUI and animation if you really want it.

Hm, I'd have to say sake-bento's Ripples inspired me to start making VNs for the story telling element, Katawa Shoujo inspired me to improve my art.

RE: Alistair++ has shown me what I can do with a game. I have no interest in making a dating sim, but the game was so well done that I look at the script for reference when I need to know how change around a few things on my own game
Projects:
Alone- (Horror/Sci-Fi) Complete! Link
Demokratiya- (Adventure/Action) I'm kind of winging it with this one. Goal is 100,000 words. Yeah, it's gonna take a while.

Hmm...

When it comes to dedication and characters, probably Fantasia. I mean, seriously, I wish I could make VNs fast like azure. :D
When it comes to art, humor, and programing, Re: Alistair ++ (The trio that made it = awesome)
sake's text was good too...and though it hasn't exactly been made yet, the upcoming Jisei kinda reminds me of the my own VN. It makes me want to make my VN faster XDD Just kidding.

Paradise Heights, Immoral Study, Time Stripper Mako, Ganguro Girl, Sim Girls Beta, Three Maids Story...

Games like that showed me that even simple games can be really fun. Those are all h games though..

Katawa Shoujo, The Question, Cute Light and Fluffy...

Showed me what to aim for with my VN project.

Katawa Shoujo would be the main inspiration I guess. It's so beautifully created.

My *real* inspiration comes from non the Ren'py Higurashi & Umineko VN's though :X

Hmmm... Metropolitan Blues, for sheer writing genius and great mood setting. I have only come across one other VN on this forum that has equalled the storytelling structure I've found in Metropolitan Blues, and that was Tomorrow. Pygmalion was also interesting because the POV was from a statue, and the last choice was very well-written. They've inspired me to restructure my story better.

Magical Boutique, for the first-ever sim game built using Ren'Py. It also showed me what creative use of the interface can do. When I Rule the World for similar reasons - the screen layout was very unique. They led me to start experimenting with layout and customising the way I present the choices to the users.

Anyway, all of the above led to me making Wedding Vows the way it was.
