I like the first one, I always love that water-color feeling!

Dunno. THe second one looks more VNish.

Depends on what kind of VN you want to do though.

I prefer the second one.

Overall, the second one has more of a clean, polished look while the first one looks rougher. A rough look isn't necessarily a bad thing, but in this case I feel that it draws that attention away from the subject toward the technique, which can interfere with suspension of disbelief.

Yeah, I also agree with this completely. There is a large difference beetween the technique that simulates such effect and and one, which just makes the art look plain rough and unfinished. Of course, it's your choice to stick with whatever you find to your liking. My advice - stick with more polished version, at least if you're not planning to work a little bit more on the first example. If so, I hope to see something nice :) But yeah, I find techniques that simulate traditional art more appealing for me than the "slim n' glowy, clean cell-shading" ones, be it soft or hard, I don't care.

If you have more questions on the "arty" side of a vn cg production, give a call and I'll try to help. I'll can also try to give you some examples for better explanation.

I like the first one's body but the second's face looked so much cleaner. I think what I don't like about the first face is all the lines under the eyes :? .

First one if you are using the same technique or photography for the background. Second one if you color the background digitally.

I agree with Wintermoon and IceD here. If you want to go for the artsy look, I think you should polish things some more~

I agree that the first one does look kinda rough. More specifically, the hat and the shirt look blotchy and uneven. Maybe it's because they're a larger area, but they don't seem to have the same flow as the hair and skin. Parts of it seem to just get darker or lighter without any particular direction, and there doesn't seem to be nearly as much smoothing between the colours. Same with the stripes on the shirt. If you could get the clothes to the same quality as the skin and hair, I think it could look really good. But, failing that, I'd go with the cell shaded one on the right, for the sake of consistency.
