My midi melodies (critique please) * Updated *

#1 Post by Morgan D » Tue Apr 05, 2011 2:58 am

I like to make music midi for my visual novel project. I would like to receive a critic (I am not professional). They are five short melodies.

Centro comercial (a store, gallery, you know)
http://www.goear.com/listen/521566d/cen ... l-morgan-d

Pueblo monstruo 01 (monster town, where you're the only human)
http://www.goear.com/listen/f77ecb6/pue ... 1-morgan-d

Día de escuela (funny school day, classmates, girls, you know)
http://www.goear.com/listen/813c9a6/dia ... la-dmorgan

Caja musical clásica (classic music box)
http://www.goear.com/listen/1a1e984/caj ... a-morgan-d

Melancolía (melancholy, sad moments, romantic)
http://www.goear.com/listen/dc2b519/melancolia-morgan-d

Melancolía (piano) (same song, piano only)
http://www.goear.com/listen/7d01d0b/mel ... o-morgan-d

They can use my music if they like (send me a PM), only give me the appropriate credit.

NOTE: Sorry about my english (my native language is spanish).

Oh, I like them C:
I was expecting the second one to have a slower rythm/beat/tempo/whatever, though (sorry, I'm not familiar with musical terms, so please bear with me)., making it so fast doesn't give me the impression of something eerie or creepy... or maybe I'm just wrong and this monster town is a very cheerful place with tons of multicolored monster-people xD

I'm no expert, but yeah. I think they're nice C:

Your answer is correct, that song is not for a creepy scene (is for a cherful monster town). I have other songs for scary moments.

I think they're fine the way they are, it all depends on the purpose of the music and what kind of mood you hope to relate. My one suggestion may be to change up the instruments/sounds and the arrangement every so often so your listeners do not get fatigued. Keep it up the good work :)

I like your themes. They both have their own atmosphere, have good rythm and lastly, they don't sound like they were composed "just for fun".
The common error is that aspiring composers compose without having a little grasp of what they are trying to achieve.

There are good bass rythmics, some good sense of drum rythms, maybe a little lack of melody swaps but overall it's okay.

I'd say it's just too bad that your instrument renderers are quite bad, because they make your compositions sound like postcards music boxes.
Maybe if you used better samples...

But it's a good start.

Thanks for the critic, I will follow the recommendations. I am studying another program for modern songs. The style midi is classic but it will not be the only one that I practices.

I liked them a lot, the second was my favorite by far. They felt like a flashback to the old days of gaming. I'm a sucker for upbeat tempos. I hope you upload more songs or would be willing to help out on projects.

What program did you use for making the music?

Second melody is my favorite too.

I upload two new songs.... this time I used slow music, for sad moments or romantic scenes.

I really like the music box! Would you mind if I use it for a VN? Appropriate credits will be given of course. :D

I think the "melancholy, sad moments, romantic"... the background sound makes it hard for me to hear the "sad" in the song.
