Indeed. Maybe we could benefit from a tutorial or cookbook entry on updating Intel graphics drivers? I could possibly write it, though I've only had experience with updating on one particular Windows 7 laptop. There's probably quite a few people who would need to update on XP.

I'm debating if I should just require ANGLE on windows if an Intel card is found. I think we've had a ton of problems with the Intel Windows GPU drivers.

I don't know why more companies can't handle driver updates like Nvidia.
1. Go to Nvidia's website, it detects what GPU you have and directs you to the most current driver version.
2. Download the driver.
3. Run the driver and it checks your system for compatibility AGAIN before it screws around with anything, then automatically removes the old drivers, installs the new ones, and then gives you a summary on any new improvements you just got.
Easy as pie.
On the topic discussion - I guess playing a 1080p video file in Ren'Py would murder most people's systems? I say that since the Homeward video looked quite pixelated and low resolution in this test for me. I just really hate it when the cool videos in a game look lower quality than the graphics themselves. Since my game is HD resolution, I'm not sure I'll include videos at all if I can't match the game resolution, but if most people couldn't play the videos anyway, maybe it doesn't matter.

I'd guess a lot of those problems are because people with integrated GPUs are not really into the whole "update drivers" thing like those with a dedicated GPU are.

Do you mean DirectX mode? For what it's worth, that doesn't work at all for me... I could only run games with OpenGL or software.
Specifically, I get this message when I try running in DirectX mode:
And this log:
- log.txt
- (485 Bytes) Downloaded 83 times
I once tried updating DirectX as directed by the performance warning dialog. It installed successfully, and running a Ren'Py game no longer brought up the performance warning dialog. However, within a few seconds (I think when trying to skip the splashscreen in my game), the game would crash pretty freaking hard. Examples:
- My computer screen goes black, then comes back. The game window is then completely white, and I have to end the Ren'Py process to save it.
- My computer screen goes black and doesn't come back. Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't work, Alt-Tab doesn't work, closing and opening the laptop lid doesn't work. I have to reboot using the power button.
At least I could do a system restore to revert the DirectX update, so things went back to normal after that. But... yeah, that's my DirectX experience. >_>;

Built with the latest Ren'Py, which uses GL_BGRA and GL_UNSIGNED_INT_8_8_8_8_REV. So it should be fast, even on broken drivers.

The first time I played the Homeward OP there was a little hiccup but when I replayed it it was fine.

Everything else works perfectly for me.

For the record- I think this is a great idea.

Force DirectX: Plays all videos fine.
Force OpenGL: Plays all videos fine.
Force Software: Plays all videos fine.

Even if we get the video running smoothly on our own computers, isn't the biggest issue going to be performance for the people playing our games? I should learn to read properly.
All 3 tests worked fine for me. Exactly the same performance as if I ran them through VLC. Exciting prospects!

I keep seeing the Performance Warning dialogue myself - using Linux. The odd thing though, is that I'm using Linux Mint and it will show without fail on a 64-bit machine, but using Ubuntu instead seemed to have stopped it. Both distributions are more or less the same except for desktop so I'm curious at how it could work correctly on one and not the other. I was playing "Analogue: A Hate Story" (which is a work of art I think) and it gave me this in a log:
======================================================================
Fri Sep 21 01:03:44 2012
Linux-3.2.0-30-generic-x86_64-with-debian-wheezy-sid
Ren'Py 6.13.11.1715
Analogue 0.0
Couldn't import gl renderer:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/home/william/Desktop/Analogue-1.2-linux-x86/renpy/display/core.py", line 1256, in make_draw
__import__(mod)
ImportError: libXmu.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Unknown renderer: gl
Performance test:
======================================================================
I noted the error and traced the specific file to the "libxmu6" package. The file it explains does not exist actually does. So, I'm at a loss as to why it should not work - to be honest, I put the error down to the bane of any gamer: Intel graphics (enough said). I just noticed it's based on 6.13 - maybe it's been fixed in the new version. But still, the same machine: two different distros - but similar ones, and still it acts this way. I spent £400 on this laptop and the "Intel HD" graphics have been a problem no matter what OS you're on
Works on Wintrolls (sigh). Curious though... By the way, I have no problems whatsoever on an Atom or an NVIDIA chipset. Just Sandybridge (but nothing works right on that anyway).
EDIT: Hope this went into the right place. Sorry if it didn't

It's possible that you have a 64-bit version of libXmu, but not a 32-bit version. That would cause the error. 6.14 has a 64-bit build, so it should be less of a problem in future games.

It works, your video
but my game of Dandelion, that video still crashes...
