1) Ren'Py doesn't work on Jython.
2) Jython doesn't work on Android.

If 2 was fixed I'd probably work on 1.

Just for fun I presume? It seems that on android there's even less money than iphone (if possible!) to be made :) On iphone btw running python is possible, a friend of mine did it and was easy according to him (performances weren't that great though). Not that I encourage you to spend any time on those devices rather than improving the engine for Pc/Mac/Linux.

How much are Androids and Kindles going for right now, guys?

Oh, also, found a forgotten/lost iPod touch in the parking lot on Christmas Eve. Shit was awesome, heh. We were going to return it but the employee outside said, don't worry about it because it'll be marked off as overstock. It was pretty cool because we were planning on getting one anyway...

Man, you're sooooo lucky. I'm jealous...

Well, I wouldn't call it luck... luck depends on your faith, IMHO.

And science is mapped according to public opinions and definitions, etc, but I digress...

Yeah, science is just another secular religion. It's not like we have concrete evidence of advances wrought by scientific method. (he says sitting in front of a powerful computer sending bits across a global communication network in near-realtime)

Pretty much. I like the openness of the android market/platform, and the way people can just download and install .apk files, so that's something I wouldn't mind supporting.

What's an .apk file and how is it encoded?

UTF-8, CCS, HTML, exe, or dll?

Hopefully none of the above. (Though I hope they're using UTF-8 for text, as locale-specific encodings are a nuisance everywhere they pop up.)

My money's on it being a zipfile with specially constrained contents... *websearches* Oh look, it's a zipfile with specially constrained contents. And an XML manifest thrown in.

Hi PyTom,

Sorry about stirring up the waters. I'm just interested about your current thoughts/willingness about porting Ren
'Py for the Android.

I think it's gonna be a huge market so it's worth considering imho.

Greets,

It's not a matter of if, but when.

I now have a new phone (a Samsung Galaxy S), so that's taken care of. There are some performance improvements I'd like to make in the Ren'Py core, and when I finish them, it'll be time to port to smartphones.

Yup, now you'll be so busy playing with apps it will be hard to find time to write one (not that I'm saying my Nexus One affected my productivity... not at all) :D

I got a Droid specifically to develop games on. I think it would be very awesome to see Ren'Py on the android OS :D How hard would it be to convert Python to Java?

Very. That's not the approach I'm taking. What I'm doing is porting Python to android, and then linking it with java using JNI. Then the Ren'Py code should run mostly unmodified.
