I've been trying to download the visual novel engine all day but every website it takes me to says i'd have to pay is there any way i could get it for free?

I'm assuming by "the visual novel engine" you're referring to Ren'Py? If so, the download link is here.

Well, to use Ren' Py, you need a script editing program which you can download from here: http://www.renpy.org/wiki/renpy/Editors

Make sure to download Java. And from here on in, you can learn how to use Ren' Py by looking at the tutorial game and/or look up threads that will have information you want here.

I'm curious, but what site were you going to that was requiring you to pay to download Ren'Py? It's not illegal to do so, but it is kinda sleazy.
