Looking for an editor/proofreader

#1 Post by Camille » Fri Apr 29, 2011 1:01 pm

I'm looking for one person who might be interested in being a proofreader/editor for Machina Jewel. You'll have to be on the lookout for typos, grammatical errors, things that sound too vague, characters acting out of character... That sort of thing. I also expect you to have a decent amount of time to do this, or be able to set aside time. If you can only talk to me once a week, that probably won't fly. D: I'm a huge perfectionist and like to have things fixed quickly.

There's just two things: one, I'm an incredibly tl;dr writer. I've only just gotten to the tip of the iceberg that is the story of this game and it's already over 10,000 words. Since I stopped fretting over the design/GUI, I've written almost 2,000 words a day. So like, there's a lot of text and I write more of it on a semi-frequent basis. I expect you to be really harsh and picky because I want to do the best job possible within the realms of my ability. Even though I consider myself a decent writer, this is the first time I've written a script like this and it's been a while since I took an English course. Also when I have to code AND write script, there are bound to be errors. The nature of this game makes it so I have to keep track of multiple things at once, so some things get overlooked. Um, I also ramble a lot. So don't be someone who minds me gushing about character development and plot twists.

Two, we can't pay you with actual money. ): We're releasing this as a free game (though donations are encouraged because the two of us have invested some money out of our own pockets to do this game) and we're both starving college students, so we really don't have the resources to do so, unfortunately. But in return for helping, I'll put your name in the credits and let you download all the alpha/beta versions of the game that so far only the two of us and two beta tester friends have access to. My friend and I are being very mysterious/vague about this project in order to drum up anticipation, so if you're not on the "staff", you won't see much of the game until it's done. So this way you get lots of sneak peeks! :D Also, as the editor, you will be the only person other than myself to have total knowledge about all the choices and endings, even the super hard-to-get ones. You'll also receive my eternal gratitude and affection?! :3

So if you're interested or you know someone who might be interested, send me some examples of your writing or list some of your experience, etc, and you'll be considered. You can just PM it to me or reply to this topic... Whichever's easiest. <3 I know this sounds super demanding so I won't be surprised if nobody's interested, haha. /spartan VN maker??

You can see examples of my own writing (all of which has been self-proofread since these works were written for fun) here if you want to see what you're getting into. I try to catch a lot of typos and whatnot on my own, but of course I miss things. :[

Well hello there :3 I'm sort of new to these fourms but I've been creeping them for a while and just finally decided to sign up. I've read over your post and I'm interested in being your proofreader / editor :)

Though I haven't really done much in terms of editing or writing for games, I've done a lot of story writing outside of lemma. If you'd like to check it out, here's a link to my longer works:

If fanfiction isn't your cup of tea I'll put a short section of one of my original works for ya. In terms of time, I've got all the time in the world. Last year of high school with last period spare so I get home early, and I also have a case of insomnia so I'm up for long periods of time anyway. Not much after school stuff, other then making sure to watch jeopardy (oh yes, I am a nerd to the core <3) but other then that I'm free.

I can do contructive harsh, not a problem. So just let me know if you want me xD

Here's the short little blurb from a story I wrote:

The dreams Max had been having, only the vivid ones, started occurring three years ago. Well that was a lie, it was more like he had only started paying attention to them for the past three years, though odd dreams had been a contant throughout his whole life. It was really strange, like a movie playing out its story long after the characters have gone and said the end.
It was full of action, suspense, tension, and even some romance, but it was an unusual thing for him to be seeing others in relationships like that; unusual and uncomfortable. It was definitely foreign for Max, the idea of romance and closeness like the relationships the people in his dreams shared. They were so close…
The thing that made Max start to pay more attention to the dreams, was the fact that they seem to center around only a selective group of people; people he had never seen before or even heard of, as a matter of fact, they didn’t even look like they were from modern time. For a while Max wondered if they were real people but he shook that thought off almost immediately. There was no way he could be dreaming of people that once existed (or may still exist). There was supernatural activity in his dreams, involving demons, hell hounds, and gifted people; his dreams were only dreams. Last he checked, X-Men was a work of fiction.
‘Why is he sitting alone?’
Max practically jumped out of his skin at the voice. It was so sudden, clear and loud, as if the person who spoke it was right behind him. He turned around but no one was there. The only thing he knew was that it was a male who spoke. And again, like the girls voice he heard running to school, he didn’t recognize it.
‘Someone just passed by,’ he reasoned with himself, ‘I was zoned out; it could have sounded different because of that.’
Max picked up his Pepsi bottle and drank it until there were only a few sips left in the bottle. Then he opened the muffin pack and inhaled it while still holding the bottle.
‘Ew, this school is so ugly! Why does he have to go here?’
The Pepsi bottle fell from his hands and hit the floor with a soft ‘thud’. His gaze flittered around the room looking every which way. He was sure that the voices were coming from somewhere, and somewhere close, but there was no one near him. Was there something underneath the desk? Were some kids trying to make him think he was crazy? He looked under the table and under his chair; nothing.
‘Geez, what is this kid LOOKING for?’
To his left? Max could have sworn the voice came from his left. Standing up from his crutching position, Max turned to his left, where the only window in the cafeteria was. He froze, his breath hitched in he throat. Parked almost right outside the window in the parking lot, was the black Aston Martin that he had sworn had been following him. He couldn’t tear his gaze away…to many thoughts ran through his head…but the underlying question of all of them was: Why is this car everywhere he turned?
Fidgeting nervously, Max averted his gaze quickly with all his will power.
‘Coincidence, that’s all it is. It’s just a coincidence that the car has been in the same places I’ve been. I’m over-reacting.’ Max breathed steadily trying to keep himself calm.
