Need an Artist for Visual Novel

#1 Post by ZombieRamen »

Hey everyone! I'm making a visual novel, codenamed Project2 for now, that needs an artist to illustrate character sprites, backgrounds, and cgs. I'm going for a style similar to this. I already have some ideas for characters made; see here and here.

Takao Minori has a perfect life. His sister is annoying, his parents are great, and his friends like him. That was before around 10:45 on 23 October, 2011, when his family dies in a car accident on the way back from a surprise birthday party they were getting ready for him. Takao occupies himself during his family’s absence until a police officer arrives to inform him about his family’s death. Confused, depressed, and angry with himself, Takao is uprooted from his old life and thrown into a new world of unfamiliar settings and people. However, amidst all this confusion and melancholy, there is happiness to be found in the friends that Takao chooses to seek out.

The story will be realistic fiction, and the first few days of its story have already been written. I would be happy to provide a pre-release build for anyone considering being my artist. Also, artists should know that the currently planned story will include sexual content towards the end of the game, and you will need to provide CGs for those events.

Now for what needs drawing thus far:

-Takao's bedroom
-Multiple digital clockfaces (I have permission to use a clockface font)
-A dining room
-A recreation room
-A living room
-A CG of a dining table with breakfast food
-Stairs
-A police station
-The inside of a car
-A Chinese restaurant
-A hallway in a police station
-The main area of a police station
-A room where counselors meet with patients
-A girl's bedroom
-A bedroom at a police station similar to a hotel bedroom
-Takao's mom and dad
-Takao's sister, Ren
-A counselor
-A detective
-A police officer

Keep in mind that this is only for what has been written as of now. Once the rest of the story is coded, I'll need three girls, a teacher, Takao's aunt, backgrounds of Takao's aunt's house, and backgrounds of a school.

I realize that this is a lot to ask for for an artist working for free (the game will be open source), so if there's anything I can do to make an artist's workload easier, I'd be happy to work with the artist to do so.

I don't know if I could do all of those, but it would be nice to practice backgrounds :) I'm currently working on another project, but I may be able to help draw some backgrounds atleast.

Thanks so much for your response. I already have placeholder backgrounds that I've made and modeled crudely in Blender, so it will be easy to draw the backgrounds since you'll know where everything is and the general shape of the room. Would you like me to send you the placeholders and the Blender file?

Uh well, I don't have blender actually, and I have no idea how to use it ^^; what you COULD do is possibly edit the backgrounds in photoshop to look better. But I don't have the know-how to do that successfully, sorry.

I think you're not understanding what I meant. I didn't mean that I want you to make scenes in Blender; I'm saying that you could use the placeholders I made so you can understand what I intended the rooms to look like. Since you don't know Blender, I won't send you the file; though all you'd need to do is move the camera around to see the rooms from different perspectives.

So do you want me to send you the pre-rendered PNG placeholders so you can see the basic geometry of the rooms?

So you're not interested in drawing backgrounds for Project2, then?

I don't know why, but I'm interested in doing some character sprites. I think I just really want an excuse to draw in a more anime style (and porn), lol. How many characters (and poses) do you think you'll be needing?

Also, just in case you were curious, here are some examples of my work though they haven't been toooooo anime for a while now. Theoretically, I know how to do it, lol.

Excellent! Thanks for volunteering your time. Though at this point in time I'm fairly certain of a somewhat definite number of characters, I'm not quite sure on poses yet. Firstly, however, are you capable of drawing in a style similar to this?

The characters needed at this point are:

-Takao's Mom, a calm and dignified 38 year old woman
-Takao's Dad, a clumsy, but kind 42 year old man
-Takao's sister, Ren, an annoying 17 year old sister with a serious side
-A police officer, nondescript
-A detective, kind, congenial, but serious; young
-A counselor, a woman just out of college, kind, enthusiastic
-Takao's aunt, a woman who appears to be kind, but is physically abusive, age 43
-Mr. Michio, owner of a Chinese restaurant
-A teacher
-Alice Peterson, a quiet and thoughtful girl, age 15
-Haru Hisako, an upbeat popular girl, age 15
-Kasumi Masako, an outgoing and intelligent girl who wants to see change in the world, age 15
-A panel of judges

I realize that the list is a bit lengthy, so feel free to take shortcuts on minor characters like the police officer, teacher, and restaurant owner.

I'll have to get back to you on poses. Also, I already have mockups made of Haru, Alice, and Kasumi. See here.

Thank you so much for volunteering.

Y'know, I don't think I'd mind it too much if you did the initial character designs (like you did for the three girls).

Hrmmmm, sorry for shoddy camera photo. My scanner isn't hooked up just quite yet (been too lazy, really, lol).
Image
I'll try inking and colouring it. Maybe it'll turn out more anime then. Hopefully....

Wow! You have no idea how amazing it felt to see that picture. Thanks so much for drawing that. As for drawing other initial character designs - I'm not an incredible artist, and it takes quite a while to even make initial designs like those, but I'll try to do the other characters, too.

Also, a few things about Alice: maybe it's just me, but her hair seems a bit thin in the picture. Do you think you could make her hair thicker? The other thing was that since I'm no artist, her expression may have came out a bit wonky in the picture. I was aiming for a neutral/slightly happy expression - similar to one you'd see on a character's default sprite.

Again, I can't thank you enough for your time and effort. I'll get straight to work on the other characters.

Hrmmmmmm, still too thin?

Lol, alright. I'm just really bad at designing characters. This probably stems from the fact that I have no fashion sense at all, lol. ~.~

That's much better. Though maybe it's just the lack of color, but she looks old/sad in that picture. That being said, I did a fairly poor job of illustrating her expression in the mockup. Thanks for your patience with me on this. I'll continue working on initial designs.

Wow! Nice work on the sprite. I hope you're not getting irritated at me, judging by your emoticon.

Alice is just about to come into play in the story. I'm on day four of the story, I believe. Takao transfers to Hikaru high school on day five, so she'll be put into the story as soon as I start writing day five, which should be either today or tomorrow. I'll PM you with a download link with what I've written of the story so far.

Also, Alice is going to be a very pensive, calm, almost apathetic person. I suppose one could go about comparing her to Yuki from Haruhi Suzumiya, though she also has qualities similar to Hanako from Katawa Shoujo, in that she is anti-social. I was wondering if you could move her glasses up further, as where they currently are makes her look like a librarian, which wasn't really what I was aiming for. Also, having her hands clasped together gives off the impression that she is a maid, which isn't like Alice's personality at all. I really hope I'm not being too picky.

Forums were down several minutes ago, but I've finished a new character design. It's Megumi, Takao's mother.
