Newbie Musician makes songs to improve

#1 Post by Scroll_Up » Tue Dec 18, 2012 2:55 pm

Hi
I am Scroll_Up, a newbie musician.
Since i started making music i had quite some problems with getting better. Its been about 2 years now, and i need some challenges for myself. And thats where you come in.
I have been looking through the recruitment section and found a lot of musicians,
so it seems to be that a lot of visual novels are missing original songs.

So a friend of mine, suggested me to come here, because i would reach a lot of people and the support here is fantastic. Now you might ask me, why here at a visual novel site? Well that because of my music, since it sounds like it would fit well in a visual novel, i dont really know.

Here are sample songs i made:
https://soundcloud.com/scroll_up/sample
https://soundcloud.com/scroll_up/erhu-sample-theme
https://soundcloud.com/scroll_up/sad-theme
https://soundcloud.com/scroll_up/violin-sample
https://soundcloud.com/scroll_up/preview-of-an-opening

If you like what you hear, why not drop a reply.
Lets join hands.

Hi there! I really like the feel of your music and I'd like to talk to my group about bringing you on (you can see our project here; if you're not at all interested I understand). I'm curious though, do you have any other samples of your work?

Oh thanks for liking my music I don't hear that very often.
As for being in a group, I already submitted my application as an musician to an other group, though I'm waiting what their answer will be, so everything is open right now. I do have other samples songs, but they still need some work here and there. If I upload new songs I'm going to make sure to link them in this thread.

I'm glad to hear it! Would you be comfortable splitting yourself between two projects, though?

That's the question here!
I never experienced something like that, so i can't decide and say, that I'm comfortable with it. I guess, I need to ask other musicians here, for matters like that. Also I don't want to overwork myself, because I make music for fun and not as a job.

Gotcha. Well, while I'd very much like to have you along, I fully understand if not.

Hey, Raith... buddy...

He applied on our forums a little while before making this post. So I think the other project he might be talking about is ours xD. Or maybe not.

Well that all works out nicely then xD

To explain, scroll, Ranger and I are part of the same studio, but we have different primary projects.

I really like the feel of your sample song! It's very nice, particularly the (guitar?). I'd love to hear more of your music, if you plan on putting any up!
Keep up the good work.

Hi !
Your sample work is really nice, but maybe you should try to show us more stuff, to understand how wide your compositions can be ! :)
About your sample, here are some little things to say, mostly about mixing (not that I'm better than you, but it can be helpful to get another composer's eye :p) :

- Your drum kick is a little bit too loud
- The song lacks of reverb, to make the song "open up" a little (the most important is for the solo instruments : guitar and solo violin)
- Maybe you should try to use more of the stereo effects, but that's my taste, some do really amazing things without a wide stereo !
- I really like the vibraphone in the background <3
- Your patterns are too much discernible, maybe you could try to make instruments play between the patterns ?

But it's nice to see a new composer here, it's not a kind of artist you find everyday here :)

Composer of the team. Music is magic.
If you got interested, go see my stuff at my Workshop.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions you made, I will try to work on it :D
And yes I will upload more songs in the future.

I like it. :)
It reminds me of old video game music.

I don't know if adding reverb would make it better.
I like the dry sound of it, personally.
