Programmer looking for work!

#1 Post by Xenocartographer » Tue Jan 15, 2013 7:52 pm

I'm a fairly good coder looking to make some money doing something I enjoy. If anyone needs an inexpensive programmer for their game, look no further!

What do I offer?
Well, I've done some work with Ren'Py before, for a Homestuck fan VN and various practice projects. (I also know Java, and am also capable of building Web applications, if either of those matter to anyone.) I'm also capable of animating sprites/scenes programmatically pretty well. That's not to say that I can create an animated sprite from scratch, but rather that I can work with an artist to make one in not much longer than it would take that artist to create a normal sprite. But regarding pure coding, I can do standard VNs, VNs with RPG elements, or even "walkarounds" like this page of Homestuck, in any of the three languages I mentioned previously.

How much do I charge?
Given that I've never done paid programming before, I'm not going to charge much. Exactly how much would depend on the scale of the project, obviously. We can negotiate.

Do I have any limits?
I won't code porn. Otherwise, I'm up for anything. This includes things that aren't typical visual novels! I mentioned "walkaround" games earlier; another example would be a combat-based RPG, which can actually be created in Ren'Py fairly easily. I prefer things with a neat story, but coding it its own reward for me.

So! If you need a coder for a VN or other fairly similar game, talk to me!

Great to see there are eager programmers out there! A suggestion though: I think it would be easier for you if you charged for the amount of code instead of hours.

Good luck and have fun :D

If you charged for amount of code I'd love to work with you. By "hour", especially on the internet, is very risky and very subject to whim. Anyway, if you're willing to try a different pricing scheme, I'm extremely fair and I could use some help programming some things.

Edit: Just realized that you provided an example and I missed the link. You seem to be quite good and my code would be fairly simple and straightforward. My site is Klokreations.net and if you're interested in working with me, you can either join there and discuss it with me on my site's chatbox, or we can email each other or whatever floats your boat.

As someone who just got their first commercial renpy programming project last week. I'll tell you that charging by the hour isn't going to work. You need to charge a fixed amount and make sure your pay is proportional to the amount of work/time your going to invest in a particular project. You need to understand, that a lot of the people offering jobs on these forums aren't some BIG giant game studio and can't pay you by the hour. They need to know exactly, how much you are going to cost them and if your fee is worth worth the investment. Also, if you don't feel confident in your abilities to program at first, I recommend you offer to do some pro-bono work so they can judge if they want to contract you. This also let's you gauge whether you have the skill level needed for the project. It's also a good way to get your foot in the door and win a project against other prospective programmers. Just my two cents.

Alright, point taken. I've edited the OP. Thanks for the heads-up!
