PaperDoor Studios is Recruiting Voice Actors [CLOSED]

#1 Post by ShojiAmasawa » Sat Mar 15, 2014 2:39 am

Greetings. I am head writer and organiser for PaperDoor Studios, and I have decided to open this thread because―well―this is a learning experience. Maybe I should do this later on in the development process, but maybe doing it now is the best choice. Either way ...

PaperDoor Studios is recruiting voice actors for EVOLVEd: Echoes of the Codex War , and One Night Of [Snow]. EVOLVEd acts as a teaser for One Night, as well as Myriad Blades: Codex War, but the latter is still being written, while One Night is very near completion in terms of writing. EVOLVEd, on the other hand, is nearly done in terms of everything. It has been written, drawn, mostly programmed, and almost completely voiced, aside from the protagonist. All of these characters will carry over into One Night Of [Snow] and any possible sequels.

At the moment, the intent is for One Night Of [Snow] and possible sequels to be commercial games, as they are by no means small undertakings. I believe everyone should be compensated for the work they put in. I am currently attempting to raise money through my own work. No matter what―even if you are allergic to the ink and paper money is made with―you will be payed.

The games would have no direct 18+ content, but the outlines involve characters discussing sex at some points, as well as openly homosexual characters, and frequent cursing. Please make sure you are comfortable with this.

PaperDoor Studios is a small, but skilled and dedicated team. We put our all into everything we do, which we hope is reflected in the quality of EVOLVEd: Echoes of the Codex War. EVOLVEd is actually a very short game, so we are making quite a leap with One Night Of [Snow], which will probably max out at over 100,000 words. We are looking for someone who would be willing to reprise their role if everything works out, and people who could be called on when the time comes.

In brief, One Night Of [Snow] is the story of four young people who gain superpowers, and get into a whole mess of danger because of it. They meet Matthew Cunningham, a fellow Demi (the in-universe term for people with powers, deriving from the term "Demigod"), and subsequently battle a madman named Tulskov, who intends to use a superpower bestowing drug to wreak havoc throughout the city.
The EVOLVEd: Echoes of the Codex War voice cast is as follows
  • Emi Kumashiro ― Trina Duehart
    Hanako Masomu ― Annie Quinn
    Takei Kumada ― Steven Kelly
The characters in EVOLVEd: Echoes of the Codex War who do not have voices yet are as follows.
  • Eishida Takanahashi ― The protagonist. Eishida is ordinary to the point of being uninteresting, at least on the outside. While he rarely acts out, he is always observing his situation, always forming conclusions and opinions which may or may not be shared by his friends. Actually, I have a very specific voice in mind for him. Open this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hiTMX9Vegw , go to 38:20, and look for the man wearing the yellow sash. Something like that would be ideal, but not essential.
Dialogue Samples:
“And even if she was, what makes you think you have the right to talk to an upperclassman like that? Now scram, before I turn you into frogs!”
“We could kill two birds with one stone, and test our powers in an abandoned building. Isn’t there an old garage that no one uses in the industrial district?”
“What can I do, Emi? The idiot’s obviously got no sense of self preservation, so why should I bother trying to give him one?”
Character in One Night Of [Snow] who do not have voices yet are as follows.
  • Takahisha Setsuna ― One of the four main characters, who―due to in-story reasons, does not appear in EVOLVEd. He is the brains of the cast, but also some of the brawn. He has a habit of going into dangerous situations with little concern for his―or his friends'― safety. For reference on what I would like him to sound like (which you are by no means obligated to imitate) refer to the video linked above, go to 38:20, and look for the man in the orange sash. Or, just give him a mild accent from the American South.
    Dialogue Samples:
“I’m Takahisha Setsuna, and this is Hanako Masomu. Pleased to meet you, Mrs. Kumashiro.”
“Oh come on! Do you really think I’d lead us somewhere dangerous?”
“It might not be corruption. People with powers would completely undermine the way the world works. If humanity is split up into people with, and people without powers, then what?”

Tulskov ― The main antagonist. Tulskov is a mysterious individual who seems to have no motivation other than causing havoc. Medium pitch, usually calm and cool, but with a penchant for going berserk at pivotal moments. A Russian accent would be ideal. Basically, think of a Russian version of Mark Hamill's portrayal of The Joker.
    Dialogue Samples:
“At the moment, you are outnumbered and outgunned. Step away from the crates, and tell your friends to do the same.”
“All Demi are in a constant state of evolution. The powers you have are not the powers you will be stuck with.”
“Matthew, Matthew, Mathew, you see what you made me do? I was just going to fire a warning shot, and now you made me shoot that poor, sickly boy in the leg, and you KNOW HOW DANGEROUS IT IS TO GET SHOT IN THE BLOODY LEG! You have NO sense, Matthew. NONE. ZILCH! And, you made me WASTE A BULLET on someone who’s probably going to die in a few years anyway!”

Matthew Cunningham ― A Scottish mercenary who seems to be an old enemy of Tulskov. Despite his profession, he is polite, clean shaven, and classy―preferring to wear a suit and tie over a combat suit.
    Dialogue Samples:
“To begin with, I am Matthew Cunningham, currently the heir to the Cunningham business empire back in Scotland. I am a Demi, like you. My powers are molecular manipulation and physical enhancement, and have been passed down through my family for over a hundred years.”
“You know, I thought you’d find that term familiar. Everyone with powers will hear it at one point or another. Take me somewhere I can get cleaned up, and I’ll tell you everything.”
“Well, it’s sort of mixed up. I suppose there’s some of my blood, but most of it is from my captor.”

Julia Sagomichi ― A nun in training at the Holy-Name church in Junseishima. I was considering a Swedish accent for her, based on Ingrid Bergman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wu-h4dDM5xA.
    Dialogue Samples:
“It’s true. Our barriers will keep away any evil for a time, provided the evil has not found its way in.”
“You were wise to come here. It is very dangerous to be outside, right now. Hopefully, the city will be safe from these demons.”
“Father Burchill gave a sacrifice of his blood, which was powdered and ground into the wood which lines each entrance to this holy place.”

Arika Kumashiro ― Emi's mother, and owner of Arika's Antique Emporium. A very youthful woman, fond of good-naturedly teasing her daughter in front of her friends. Role reserved for the time being.
    Dialogue Samples:
“Really? I never expected my daughter to be the housewife type.”
“―So he basically said: ’This city isn’t big enough for two antique shops, so why don’t we―' Oh, speak of the devil!”
“Well … If it’s for school, then I don’t really see why I should make you pay for it. This one’s on me!”

Miho Tsumugi ― A teacher at Kasumi Private High School, where the characters attend. Role reserved for the time being.
    Dialogue Samples:
“I should have expected you to want to form one at some point. All right, then. What kind of club?”
“It’s my job, Takahisha. It’s good to see you and your friends becoming more involved in school activities.”
“Sorry, it’s just―Well, all night I’ve felt as if I were being followed. I keep hearing footsteps behind me.”

Dr. Jigoro Itsumi ― A former college professor, and now an expert on "Things We Don't Understand" who works closely with Arika Kumashiro. He usually speaks in short snappy sentences unless he is annoyed or bragging, and has a British accent. He never shows any emotion outside of frustration and annoyance. For reference, listen to the first track in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eapm2l05-v4
    Dialogue Samples:
"Who am I? Dr. Jigoro Itsumi. I am an expert on such things at Getting To Faraway Places in a Very Short Amount of Time Indeed, Recognising Different Types of Trees From Quite a Long Way Away, and the Sakabe Clan."
“May I ask what you were doing, traipsing around an antique store with such careless abandon?”
“If I am correct, that was built in 2129. It is barely a decade old, yet you consider it an antique?”

    Various extras.
I actually have no problems with one actor in multiple roles, provided they have good range. I would like submissions by the end of the month (March), in mp3 format. All submissions can be sent to paperdoorstudios@gmail.com.

Please, if you have any questions, ask them! I am sure I have left something out that people would like closure on.
Yes, the video I linked to is an episode of Thunderbirds. Everyone must think I am such a FREAK.
Auditions are closed for now. Thank you for your submissions!

If you're willing to pay, there's the people at Voiceyuu, they might provide what you need.

I was considering that, but they seem a little too "big" for me to get involved with at this time. Also, I like collaborating with people who are just starting out, and not attached to an agency. It is more fun and exciting for me, and I think for the party in question.

So far, we have had lots of auditions for Arika Kumashiro and Miho Tsumugi. I would like to thank everyone who has auditioned for these characters, and announce that both are now listed as "Reserved" until further notice. This leaves a staggering amount of male characters without voices, however. Other characters can wait for a time, but Eishida Takanahashi, protagonist of EVOLVEd: Echoes of the Codex War is top priority.
