To be totally honest, I highly doubt anybody will hit you with a lawsuit over embedding a font they made ~15 years ago into a game, but it's just better to be on the safe side.
As a curious by-product of this law though, it is completely legal to create bitmapped images of the fonts, and then use those to create a new font which you may distribute or use them as the font (renpy supports bitmapped fonts) themselves.
But this is naturally a very poor workaround and will result in sub-optimal results at a higher performance impact.
