Too slow production??

#1 Post by mapletaffy » Sat Apr 30, 2011 11:04 pm

Hello. i'm making my first visual novel. . . however, I notice that I usually spend almost a day in finishing 1 CG event. . Is that normal? Or I am too slow? My tablet is not working fine sometimes. Maybe that's one of the reason. Do you have any suggestions to speed up production time????

Thanx~

I don't know about anyone else, but to me, taking a day to do a CG sounds reasonable enough.

Yup, drawing could take all day, especially if it's a complex CG. It could vary from person to person, but don't expect to finish a single CG under 4 hours... unless you don't mind with a low quality CG.

I myself need about 8 hours to make the lineart alone. That's without any BG. It's safe to say I need at least 20 hours to create a single decent CG (with BG) or 12 hours (without BG).

Don't listen to anyone else. If you're satisfied with your produced work at any given time, that is enough.

Yeah, just draw by your own standard. Like I say, it varies from person to person. A skilled artist could draws really fast... but that because they draw everyday. Don't care how much time you spent, just concentrate on creating the quality you want.

Though if you strive for professional, speed is quite an essence so practicing drawing faster is not a bad idea.

I haven't done any cgs nor sprite on the VN I'm working on, but if I didn't care with lineart that much and color it fastly, it usually took just 30 mins. but when i tried making CGs, just doing the proper anatomy and sketch took me 2-3 hours(+other designing besides BG)

A CG- can take even ages. =_= Depends on the details, techniques, skills and everything else.

So don't worry about it. ^^ Just don't rush.

Since you're making your first visual novel for yourself (mostly?) and you're not working for a company that has deadlines for you and such, it's best to take your time, I think, especially with art. There's really no such thing as "slow" in this case, and I think everyone would rather have something that takes longer but is of quality than something that's obviously been rushed.

everyhting takes time, and for a non-company setting (like mine's) we do at least three tasks per week... sooo slow... some even months...

Ack, it's SUPPOSED to take all day to create a piece of art? No wonder I have insanely low output...
Grand list of things not officially canceled:
Salt -- the heartwarming story of brain-eating space worms
Tangent -- an epic poem and/or novel about a borderline-autistic Martian imp and her relationship with God
Kittens of the Darned -- a grimdark soap opera about sexy catgirls (Indefinitely postponed until I learn to draw and color realistically)
The Other Mary -- the most perfect fic about the most perfect Mary Sue EVER
Rockheart -- a short story about a monster who kills everyone
Corrupted -- a completely different short story about a monster who kills everyone (late Worst Visual Novel Ever)
Checkpoint 36a -- the transcription of a short multi-ending dream about time travel and undead schoolgirls
In Which the Princess is Kidnapped -- an entry in the "ordinary girl ends up in an alien universe and tries to save it" genre
Pictogram Scramble: Magical Friendship Bunny Ivy -- a Flash game about a magical girl making friends (Indefinitely postponed until I learn how friendship works)

Artist speed (and quality!) varies a lot but I'd say that if you consider 1 day=8h of work (as it should probably be if you work in a office as employee) I'd say that 1 CG should be possible in that amount of time. Of course also depends on how many characters, detailed/simple background, and so on.

8 Hours for a lineart? Really? OAO

Then again I'm using SAI, so it usually takes me half that time...

This depends on the details and how complicated your sketch is. In my case it's just- how sketchy the sketch is. XD I need to spend lots of time thinking and redrawing when I lineart because sometimes- I can't even figure what I meant when I sketched something-lol. Which results in lots of-lots of hours linearting. =A= I love linearting just when I have a cleaner sketch- which happens so rarely in my cases.

I also use SAI btw. <3
